Cybernetic Necromancy

I'm a computer wizard
And late at night, when you are all in bed
I practice cybernetic necromancy
I resurrect computers from the dead!

Things I did last week:

- pulled my firm's 10-year-old server back from the brink of doom, by tracking down a persistent fault that was causing it to see double and turn itself off every hour.*

- ordered a new server.**  Also a new workstation, but I do that often enough that it's not a big deal any more.

- read a truly amazing book that was so intense it made me shake and cry and gave me nightmares, and I'm really glad I read it.

- participated in a book discussion group for said book . . . and found out I was the only one who'd actually read the whole thing and finished it.  (Even the woman who had chosen the book for the group hadn't been able to do so, and had skipped some sections.)

- got to the gym on 6 out of 7 days, for the second week in a row.

Really, this was an incredible week, and I was so damn tired at the end of it that I could hardly see straight.  Fic_rush was this weekend, and I actually got a bit of writing done, but mostly, it was a weekend of badly needed recuperation.  Next weekend, I get to ride shotgun with the outside Server Guy and do the installation.

The whole server episode was a really big deal for me -- because of the ad-hoc nature of my training and the fuzzy nature of my responsibilities, I get hit with Imposter Syndrome a lot.  Being able to pull off a coup like this -- well, I know I earned my lovely comfortable salary this week.  (Which is a good thing, because we have discovered a problem with the fuse box, which means electrical repairs, which are ZOMG spensive, but we'll be okay.)

So, there you have it.  Cybernetic necromancy!  (The verse is from a filksong by Julia Ecklar, btw.)  *waves magic wand*  Rebootio!

* Although I'm the IT person at my firm, I've never had any formal training in network administration.  I'm self-taught.  My usual troubleshooting methodology is pretty much what it says in this flowchart, and that didn't work this time.

** This was already in the works as a project, but at my old firm, it would have taken another two months of faffing about before I finally got an okay.  And I would've had to explain every line item, in exhaustive detail, to people with no real interest in the subject, but who felt that they had to question every detail or lose Boss Points.

egregious egotism, geekery
