Tape From California

Sorry I can’t stay to talk now
I’m kind of a hurry anyhow
But I’ll send you
A tape from California . . .

Duct tape, presumably.

This morning, we made our way through the Siskiyou Mountains, all draped with wisps and curtains of mist and fog, and entered California. I’ve been to California on many occasions, and there are many parts of the state that I dearly love; but this was Missy’s first time.

Too bad it was snowing.

In fact, we spent most of the day driving through snow. Most of the time, it was what I regard as ideal snow conditions - the stuff was sticking to the trees and looking pretty and festive, and melting on the road and leaving it wet and bare, so we got the pretty but not the pain. From time to time, as we trailed our way south to where Mount Shasta was supposed to have been and turned left towards Nevada, we climbed above the peripatetic snow line and started to get bits of slush on the highway. We traded off driving so that I did most of the more challenging snow trekking, but Missy did spend more time driving in more snow than she has in twenty years.

There really are supposed to be some very nice mountain peaks around here, but it appears that California couldn't afford views in the off-season, and the mountains have been put away in storage for the time being.

We stopped early for the day, at around 5:30, in Susanville, CA (and you can look that up on the map, O Best Beloved). We might have pushed on to Reno, but we didn’t feel the need to push. We’re enjoying taking a reasonably leisurely approach to the trek, and I’m still recuperating.  Reno isn't exactly high on my list of Awesome Places to Visit.

One truly grumpifying development: I’ve been taking a series of pictures as we went, mostly of Cleo (the camel) posing with the changing scenery. Today, I determined that I did not, in fact, manage to pack the cable that I need to download the pictures to the Netbook. Or, rather, I did pack it - in the truck. According to the ABF website, it’s somewhere between Seattle and Chicago right now.

If I have the chance, I may pick up a new one . . . I had been looking forward to posting some photos as part of this endeavour!

Cleo has been attempting to remain cheerful in spite of the snow, but you can tell that she has her doubts.
