uhhhh. apparently my grandparents are pretty much losing it.

we visited last weekend for my (paternal) grandmother's 91st birthday, and everything was pretty much fine...no awkward outbursts, nobody was bickering, it was good. we left sunday afternoon, and apparently sometime sunday night/monday morning my step-grandfather just...left. didn't tell anybody where he was going, he just wasn't there when my grandmother got up, and neither was their car. when he wasn't back by midnight, my grandmother filed a police report listing him as a missing person. after two days of no word, my aunts, who were staying on until wednesday anyway, helped her make arrangements for in-home care and nursing home care, should george never show up again.

on thursday, while my grandmother was away, george's son happened to stop by the house and find george there, packing some things to leave again. evidently he was planning on going to reno to do some gambling, but had turned back after hitting the big storm system that went through last week (and presumably after running out of clothes). his son called the police and had him taken to the hospital for an evaluation. when he tried to impress upon george how much distress he'd put everybody through, the response was "i don't care."

he's been released from the hospital since, as they couldn't find anything in particular wrong with him, but the police have yet to give him back his keys. and now, if you ask my grandmother how things are going, all she says it "oh things are wonderful, things are fine, we might take a little trip."

i think she's starting to get a little confused, and i think he's not taking his medication, and i think he just doesn't want to care for her anymore.
