I finally talked to Pat this morning (volunteer directior) about what she called me for on Thursday. It turns out that one of the facilitators that I worked with when I was an intern and did two groups a week (I did the Middle School kids on Mondays and my same Pre-K group on Wednesdays) was in some sort of accident and died over the weekend. I kind of assumed that it was that someone died, but Ron certainly wasn't who I thought of. But he was also part of the Volunteer Committee that I'm on, so Pat was calling people who worked with him more often first to let them know instead of having them hear about it at program tonight and Wednesday. *shit, and I never told her I'm not going to be there on Wed... need to do that after this*

We're not real sure of the details because whomever it was that called the office didn't say, but we assume it was a motorcycle accident because he was a big rider. He'd rode out to Iowa (I think she said Iowa) to visit his kids and had the accident out there. I'm not sure how old he was, but I'm guessing later 50's if not in his 60's. He'd been in a really bad motorcycle accident years ago too where he'd broken both wrists and ever since then he was on disability and didn't work, so his volunteer work at Ele's as well as a hotline here in town called The Listening Ear was his work pretty much.

He was a nice guy, but we sort of butted heads on a lot of things. He was very much into not changing anything even if it sucked because that was the way that it had always been... and well, I'm more along the lines of "we're here to help these kids and if this group sucks, then we need to make it not suck..." That's why when I dropped to doing program one night a week I chose my Wed. group over my Monday one. Not because of him but because the whole group on Monday was like that. But like I said, he was a nice guy... it's a shame to hear of his death. It's going to suck to be in the Middle School group tonight... it's the last night of program until September for them, so if they tell the kids about him (which I assume they will), they're only going to have one night in group to talk about it before breaking for a month. Hoepfully the parents have been warned and have been able to tell the kids before they get to group tonight...

*looks at clock* damn, I need to get going... picking up the wifey from the airport tonight (she's been in Memphis since Thursday) and I need to drop my film off on the way there... I also haven't been to the airport since the added security after 9/11 so it'll be interesting to see how much Capital City (that would be the airport... ya know, we're the capital... lol) has changed since then.

I'm outtie... RIP Ron.

rip, ele's
