caliborn prompt. So yes. Expect another one. Where Kiki dies. :|
Things were getting bad- desperate even. The three shadow collectors were outnumbered and vastly out of their league. No one would have thought a weak spirit animal would hire such armed forces. Mu, Nu, and Kiki cowered behind a crumbling wall. There was hardly any shelter left.
Small rocks exploded against the side. They were running out of time. There wasn't any back up coming and their escape routes were limited. Mu tried to think of a way to get out. He was supposed to be the leader of their little group. Ryuusei trusted him with this task.
His eyes scanned their surroundings. At least five armed men were now just playing with them, seeing how long it would take to smoke them out. A hundred feet on either side of them was clear opening. Without some sort of diversion, they would never make it into the woods. He clenched his jaw. There had to be a solution that would allow them to escape unharmed.
Realization dawned on him cold and fast. If they all couldn't make it, at least his brother and Kiki could. He drew on his spirit stone, feeling the feline uncoil within him. His eyes were sliding into yellow, his pupil elongating and narrowing. He turned to look at the two most important people in his life. "Nu. Kiki. Listen to me. I don't think we're all going to get out of this in one piece. Instead of all of us going down, I want you two to run into the forest as soon as it's safe, you hear me?"
He saw Nu start to protest and fiercely shook his head. "No. I won't lose you two because of some stupid mistake I made. I'll distract them. Just make it back home, okay? Promise me."
Kiki shook her head, tears pooling in her eyes. "Not without you, Mu. There has to be some other way. We can all make it!"
"There isn't. I've gone through all the scenarios in my head. We're outmanned. They've got weapons and we don't. We can't get close enough to harm them. Someone needs to distract them and it's going to be me. I'm the oldest."
"By seven minutes!" Nu protested, "I won't let you do this. You can't not when…" He trailed off, leaving his unfinished statement lingering in the air.
Mu stared at his brother sternly. "You'll listen to me, Nu. I'm in charge of this mission and you're going to do as I say."
He wasn't going to pander to them and let them believe he would make it out alive. Anyone could tell that the diversion wasn't going back to the base. This was it for Mu. There was a lot of life he would have liked to live, but he would give it up if he knew his brother and Kiki would be safe.
"Besides," he smiled humorlessly, "I've got nine lives."
Just as the gentle roar of thunder filled his ears and his form changed from boy to cat, he caught the quick flash of brown and black fur. A snarl filled the air. Nu's eyes stared into his own. Mu glared at his brother. One of the rare times Nu had to go be stubborn about something. The fur on his back stood on end, his back arching. He hissed a warning at Nu.
Before he could get his brother in line, Nu was dashing out into the fray. Mu barely had time to swat a paw at Kiki before he was sprinting towards the trees. His animal form made it quicker for him to run. He stopped just past the first row of trees. Kiki scrambled behind him. Together, they watched as Nu valiantly attempted to take down the guards. Three fell before the others managed to land their shots. With a strangled cry, Mu watched his brother fall.
