it's very odd how sometimes your past will hit you. for no reason. in dreams and then in real life. i am so happy in my present. why do thoughts of past lives keep sneaking in?
in other news. newport jazz festival was great. James Carter. Amazing saxophonist I had no idea about. Sarah Morrow. Also had no idea about her. It's rare for me to enjoy a trombone as the feature instrument. not that specifically, but an instrument that is generally reserved for background and supportive work as a frontrunner tempts taste. I mean, I love Jaco, but sometimes...it's too much. But anyway Sarah Morrow is phenomenal (first female musician in Ray Charles band... badass motherfucker) and she doesn't have to play a gazillion notes to make me cream myself. Also a stand out was Robert Glasper who even took time to talk to me and Jon after his set on one of the smaller stages. That was really cool. This amazing pianist taking like 10 minutes to answer stupid question and take pictures with two lame white kids. but it's great to see that older players (not that glasper is old. he's bbd in fact) want to encourage and help out newcomers and those of us still studying. I hope i can be half as good at the piano and half as nice as him some day. Also got to see BAD PLUS, MCCOY TYNER, DAVE BRUBECK, Hiromi was there didn't quite make it to see her but did see EDDIE PALMIERI, DR. JOHN, CYRUS CHESTNUT. Ridiculous names. It's amazing to be able to in 2 days see both the past and future of jazz. I feel like we really got to see where jazz is going and after I work through Sarah Morrow, James Carter, and Robert Glaspers albums that are coming to me soon I feel like I'll really be able to draw inspiration from them.
