Day 17: A Trip To The Fair

Aug 21, 2011 02:11

In case you couldn't tell by the title, we went to the fair today.  I tried to map our walk, but it was a little tricky with all the buildings we went in and out of.  It was somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.13 miles.

The first place we stopped was the building where my entries are.  We checked out the knitting first, and there was a moment of confusion.  My socks had a white ribbon, and I thought I'd taken 4th.  Which was more than I'd expected, so I was delighted.  Then we spotted my shawl, which had a yellow ribbon - which said "Fourth Place" on it.  We re-checked the sock ribbon, which was partly hidden, and it said "Third Place".  This is the first time I've seen a white ribbon for third place and a yellow for fourth - it's usually the other way around.  My guess is that there was an error printing the ribbons and by the time it was discovered it was too late to get them replaced.  But anyway, my knitting, which I expected to do nothing, took a third and a fourth!!!

We continued on, looking at displays, until we came to the baking section.  Again, there was a moment of confusion, since the first items we saw were the junior baking entries, which have the same categories as the senior entries.  We walked around to the other side of the display and there were the senior entries.  After a minute or two of searching, we found my category, and Mom's recipe is still holding it's own.  No, I didn't take the blue ribbon, but I did take 2nd.  So three entries, three ribbons.  I was thrilled!

We moved on to the animals - chickens, ducks, turkeys, horses (including a beautiful paint horse that had been rescued from a horrific situation), sheep and goats, cows (lots of cows!), llamas and more horses.  We got to see the rescued horse work in a round pen with her new owner - she was amazing!  He's taught her to respond to gestures and a kissing noise.  She will speed up and change direction when he indicates that he wants her to.  She was a little distracted - the round pen was set up over a small grassy area with a lot clover in it, and all she really wanted to do was eat the clover.  There are some videos of the horse (her name is Fancy) on YouTube.  They work with the Second Chance Equine Association, which has a channel on YouTube.  She's pretty incredible - you'll enjoy watching her work.

After we'd seen the animals, we were both pretty worn out, so we went back to the car and headed home.  Oh, and on the way to the car, we stopped at the camel ride, and I rode a camel.  chryssalys has the photo to prove it.  A long day, but a fun one.
