So here I am in California, but I doubt any of you have a sense of what that means for me. I'm not a biochemist like those other kids, and I'm not a lawyer or a doctor, or much of anything that is particularly clearcut. So what am I? Well, as far as the shoes I fill, it varies from day to day, I do organizational theory, social theory, curriculum theory, and such to some extent, but they aren't particularly central for me at this point. I do learning sciences, which is sort of an eclectic mix of technology, psychology, and anthropology mostly, and my job is to help develop a new field in psychology, particularly developmental psychology, around this thing we call purpose. Obviously, Big Tim to this point is an academic Big Tim, and this is not a holistic view of him, but these things sort of take primacy for me right now, given monies and such.
Inside the developmental psychology, I have a pretty sweet gig. You see, my job right now is to read interviews about what kids(10-22) want for their lives and all. This is mainly talk about what is important to them, what they want to acheive in their lives, who they want to be, and what they are doing and are planning on doing to make it happen, all while justifying it. There are kids who seem sort of short-sighted, lots of kids who are probably unrealistic, and lots of kids who are scared about their futures and struggling. In some ways this is worrying, on the other hand, there are times when struggling, being a little unrealistic, and being short-sighted may be best, and life probably shouldn't be a yellow brick road all the time. On the other hand, there are quite a few people who rock, even if they may not get to express it on a day to day basis, and that is pretty sweet.
On a side note, what do you all think is the most common thing that holds these people together, as far as what they want to do on a day to day basis?
