Hey, I can get on LJ at school! Never had the chance to discover this before, but am hanging around waiting for a meeting after an INSET day.
So, the book meme I never got around to before - from several people, I should think!
Some are rather more obscure than others...

1. The next was to write four lines in iambic pentameter. Half the field groaned, and the prefects checking the papers held back lots.

2. “By the way, I adore my bedroom, but do you think I could have the curtains washed? I believe they are red; and I should so like to make sure.” got by
katie__pillar
3. “Had Barbara paid greater attention in class, or used her wits during the examination itself, she would have done herself greater justice.”

4. She stayed at her wicket till the bell summoned the day-boarders in to dinner. Others came and went, but ______ remained comfortably where she was, hitting up runs by twos and threes with an occasional brilliant boundary to vary the monotony.

5. “Mr Gurney’s very hot on Thermals. Oh, good God, I made a joke. Well, if you want pain killers, sleeping pills, tranquillizers before a match, anti-depressants if things get on top of you - you only have to ask.”

6. She wore strings of beads and a brooch like a breastplate in the centre of the band which finished the square neck of her dress. Her hands were loaded with rings and her wrists with so many bangles that every time she moved them, she clanked! nearly got by
kittykatkins; finished off by
b_liz!

7. He would borrow the key from his father - it helped, sometimes, to be the headmaster’s son - and spend hours there in the long holidays, when all the boarders had gone home, and there was no one there to disturb him, bent over his cello, at the piano, or just sitting in the cold bare room, above the quiet, wall-enclosed fields.

8. But she was conscious of his every movement, of every page he turned, of every breath he drew. She seemed to be separately conscious of every bone in his body.

9. “Well, I never could have believed that a pack of lies could sound as much like the real truth as that book does.”

10. A judge? A soldier? A prince? Someone used to great responsibility, and responsible in his authority. Someone too-conscientious. A worrier; perhaps a perfectionist.
