This is Lieutenant Commander Dr. Leonard McCoy of the starship Enterprise, and I would like to know who is responsible for putting me in what appears to be a morgue.

[It's definitely McCoy's voice, but the accent is ever-so-slightly more prominent, and the tone is overall cooler. There seems to be a slight simmering edge of anger, but ( Read more... )

[He recognizes that tone. The voice in general, of course, is a dead giveaway that it's McCoy speaking, but that tone... Scott hasn't heard that tone in months. He's none too thrilled about hearing it now, and maybe it would be wiser of him to keep his mouth shut, but what's McCoy going to do, get him hanged again?]

I know you're no' a physicist, so I'll use small words so you can follow along, Doctor. Don't know about the morgue, but you'll no' be beamin' out o' here.

Lieutenant Commander Scott? This is a surprise.

Why not?

T'keep it simple, there's no Enterprise here. Pocket universe. Self-contained. All sorts o' time compression. Wasn't expectin' t'see you here. Miss me that much, do you?

It's been so different without you.

Tell me more about this 'pocket universe.'

[Romana is very concerned, Bones] ...Dr. McCoy? Have you...what do you remember, before waking up?

[There's a moment where he examines her before he speaks.]

I remember being on board the Enterprise. I apologize, ma'am, are we acquainted?

[she sighs] Yes, you've been here before...I took over for you at the hospital, as a psychologist. You wanted to go back into surgery.

Leonard! You're back! I knew you'd come back!

[Her voice sounds ecstatic, and she takes a quick breath to calm down.]

You're back in Bete Noire. Do you remember it at all?

[He tenses up. That's Nurse Chapel's voice - but she doesn't sound at all like the Chapel he knows, and she's calling him Leonard, like they have any sort of relationship beyond the professional. He fights down the revulsion, and speaks evenly. Best to be careful. This might be a trick.]

I'm afraid not, Nurse Chapel. What happened?

[The formality throws her for a second, but then she brushes it off. He probably thinks he's still on an away mission or something.]

You've been to this place before. It's a large city set within its own little universe and we can't escape from it. Some powerful force brings us in and sends us back home again on a whim.

[She takes a deep breath. Here comes the hard part.]

About a month ago, you disappeared. We all figured you went home. Then two days ago, you turned up again, contacting us the way you're doing now, when you were attacked and killed. The thing about this city is, if it brings you in, it has a purpose for you, so people who are killed don't stay dead. That's why you awakened in the morgue.

People don't stay dead here.

[There's a hint of interest in his voice.]

Who brought me here? And who killed me?

[It's not until later in the day that Jim's able to check his phone. He's been throwing himself into his work in an attempt to stop feeling like a miserable fuck.

And this is just the best thing in the world. He is tired and exhausted- but suddenly the world is a little bit better. This is possibly the happiest you have ever seen him. SUP, BFF?]

Well, if you aren't a sight for sore eyes.

[...if Nurse Chapel addressing him so familiarly isn't strange enough, this is downright bizarre.]

Captain.

[That gets a laugh. You're probably pissed at him for letting you get killed, but Jim will deal with that later.]

Sorry about the morgue thing. I... wasn't sure if you'd be coming back again, and it was the best place I could think of.

[...did the captain just apologize to him?]

You put me here.

Do you know who killed me?

[In the Empire, this would be code for 'was it you?']
