Uhura to Enterprise. Uhura to Enterprise. Come in, Enterprise.

[There's no response. Yet again. She mutters a soft "damnit" under her breath.]

Enterprise, are you reading me? [This last bit is followed by the sounds of equipment being adjusted as she tries to boost the signal.]

[....don't panic. Don't panic just yet. Just because there's already one Uhura in the city doesn't necessarily mean this Uhura is from the Empire.]

The ship won't answer.

[He can't see it, but her brow is furrowed in confusion. Scott's supposed to be on the ship, so what the hell is he talking about?]

Why not?

The ship's out o' range. You've landed in a pocket dimension that exists outside your own reality.

[A pause, then.]

ISS or USS?

Lovely. [Sarcastic? Uhura? Never.]

ISS.

What is USS and how do I get back to my reality?

[Shit. Shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit.

Shit.]

USS is the designation of the Enterprise of the Federation. [He manages, at least, to keep his voice steady.] Myself an' several others from that particular reality reside in this city. There is no way out.

[Shit. Shit. Shit.]

The Federation? You're talking about yet another alternate reality? [Her tone makes it clear that she's far from convinced. She's certainly not ready to accept that there's no way out.]

Why should I believe you?

There are at least four variations.

I've been here about four months. [And god he's praying that everyone's right and time works strangely and that he's not been missing that long back home.] An' I've no' found a way yet.

I see. [She's still far from convinced, but she needs more information and she can't tell if he's lying. Scotty's one of the few people who doesn't have obvious tells in his voice when he's engaging in deception.

If he's really been here four months, it's doubtful that he's the Scotty from her Enterprise, but she still has no real reason to believe him.]

Four variations, huh? Who else is here from my Enterprise? And from yours?

There aren't any others from your Enterprise. There are a few from an earlier point in the Empire's history, but none from your Enterprise.

[He lies easily, although he's been out of practice a while. Lying to Uhura is practically second nature to him.]

There is a Jim Kirk from a future Federation. A female Chekov. An' from my Enterprise, Doctor McCoy, Spock, Jim Kirk, an' the Federation version of yourself. There are others from the Federation as well, who did not serve aboard the Enterprise. A Doctor Saval, an' Miss Gaila, who I see you've spoken to already.

[She listens carefully to his explanations, eyes narrowing when he mentions Gaila. It was foolish not to encrypt her communications with the other woman, because obviously Scotty will know she's lying to her.]

Intriguing. How did we all end up here? And for what purpose?

No one knows, love. They call this place the City o' Sin. [He laughs, but it sounds just a little forced.] The booze is good, I can say that much.

Good to know [she replies dryly, still trying to get a read on him.] So what does everyone do in this Ciy of Sin? Besides drink, or course?

Fair enough.

What exactly is the Federation?

[voice] lt_cmmdr_scott June 27 2011, 21:57:14 UTC
Exactly what it sounds like. A federation of planets, as opposed to the Empire, which - from what I understand - claims dominion over other planets.

[The lies are still easy enough.]

Order must be maintained through terror [she echoes quietly.] That's the Empire's philosophy.

...There's an Uhura in your universe, too?
