Putting rat pellets down would have been utterly fine and sensible, if rats were the only animals inhabiting the mansion. But the plain and simple fact was that they were not. No, there was also a young cocker spaniel that spent most of it's time begging for treats and being a nuisance to McCoy and the name given to him by his mistress was Shchenok, a very unoriginal name, quite plainly meaning 'puppy'.

As it was, the bright green things had caught the puppy's attention completely and he was sniffing at them very curiously, or at least he had been when Pasha had collared him, yanking him away from them. That was the very reason that there was a very irritated and very short navigator seeking the person that had placed the pellets down. "You!" She snapped at the young man in the hall way, puppy in her arms and thunder in her tone. "Are you the person putting down the rat poisons?"

Topher hears the angry tone and jumps up, defensively clutching the box of rat poison to his chest. Oh, it's the Russian gal. Ohmygod, she's even more gorgeous in real life. And she's got GRRR face. So, of course Topher's suddenly feeling queasy and caught like a deer in headlights.

"I am that person. Hey there." He squeaks, since he can't deny it with the evidence in his hand. He gives a little hand-wave.

That was most definitely her GRRR face, her puppy was her closet friend in this city and if he got sick then she would be less than a happy little Russain.

"If you are intending on attempting to kill the wermin, it would hawe been considerate of you to warm the other people in the household. Shchenok almost ate one of them. He could hawe died." She snapped, tucking the dog against her chest and rubbing her thumbs over his ears. "He is an animal, he does not know any better, but as a humanoid you should hawe the intellect to hawe known better!" She announced, criticism was something she rarely dished out but she felt the need to get it off her chest for once.

Topher's face kinda crumples at her ranting speech. He can't seem to do anything right since he got here. He nearly killed a cute puppy because of his quest to do something vaguely productive? Great, Topher. Just great.

"I didn't even think of that. No-one told me there were any pets in the place. I'm sorry."

He gets back down on his hands and knees and starts grabbing the pellets up again and shoving them back in the mouth of the box.

"I'll- I'll get rid of them all. Find some other way to- a mechanical trap or something."

"Poison of all things is an incredibly inhumane way of killing an animal." Animal rights were one of Pasha's new things, it kind of came with being a pet owner and besides, Shchenok wasn't her pet, he was her best friend. And nobody wanted their best friend poisoned.

But now she feels guilty, with the stricken look that Topher had been displaying on his face. Pasha gave a sigh and rearranged the squirming pile of dog in her arms. "I am sorry, I should not hawe been so snappish."

After all, what right did she have to tell him off? "I should hawe been keeping a closer eye on Shchenok. It isn't your fault really." Pasha moved to where he was, peering into the hole, her previous anger temporarily forgotten. "Finding the nest will be an easier way of flushing them out, surely? Rather than just killing the stupid ones?"

Inhumane. Is any kind of killing humane? Nolan had deserved it, but Topher had seen the aftermath. Had had to deal with the very real consequences of his decision to help Priya confront her rapist.

Suddenly he feels like crying. Which is stupid. It's just this place. It royally sucks and he doesn't know what to do about it. He keeps his back to her, doggedly picking up the tiny pellets one by one. He wipes at his eyes quickly with his sleeve, because he needs to see what he's doing. They're really small.

"No, you're right. I just...they creep me out. And they get into the food and we don't have a lot right now. I thought I was helping. I thought I was."

Was he? Surely not, men weren't supposed to cry. Heck, even Pasha didn't allow herself to cry most of the time she wished to. It was childish and besides, it was a family rule that Chekovs don't cry. The navigator isn't sure of what to do at all, emotions are not her strong point, maths and physics are.

"That certainly seems logical." She agrees, hoping to make him feel better. "This surely will help." Pasha adds. "But perhaps a different manner would be better?" She offers, frowning before reaching down to pat him on the head. Distressed people were calmed by that, right? Being near rats and getting told off by a grumpy girl such as herself was sure not to help.

"Blood creeps me out." Chekov offers aloud, in the hopes of amending the slight tension growing.

"Yeah, I'll think of something better, I guess. Maybe some kind of miniature stunning device. Non-lethal. They can get relocated later."

The petting gesture is odd, but weirdly soothing. And it reminds him of Adelle DeWitt. Strange that he'd miss his boss, but he does.

"A lot of things creep me out. Cramped spaces. The dark. Crowds. The sky..."

"You could always conwert a phaser, coping the circuit boards isn't that dangerous." The younger woman offers. Her own phaser had been found smashed when it had finally been recovered along with her other possessions after her killing and subsequent coming back to life.

"I could help if you like, I hawe no had an engineering project in a while." She continues, crouching down behind him to peer over his shoulder, puppy held tightly in her arms to keep him away from the pellets.

"The dark is a wery logical fear. Bad things happen when there is minimal lighting and it is wery intimidating if you can not see a person's face."

"A phaser?" He gives her a quizzical look. "You mean like a directed energy beam weapon? Basically a laser gun. But that kind of stuff is still in the theoretical and prototype stage. Or maybe has been gridlocked in patent purgatory, I haven't been paying attention. But for realsies? You have one?"

His eyes are lighting up like a christmas tree at the thought of getting a look at it. But then he's aware of her looming over him and he's back to stammering a little.

"I- uh, yeah, generally the dark and I are not bffs. Bad things definitely do happen."

There's an awkward pause.

"Did something happen to you?"

"A type one, stardard issue Starfleet handphaser." Pasha nods in agreement. "I beliewe it is a laer dewice, but it works pulsating frequencies, it changes the strengths." She adds. "Mine is a little smashed, but the technology can be fixed well enough to conwert it to a simple dewice such as a rat stopper."

Ah, that isn't something that she likes to discus, with it being such recent history. "I died." She bluntly replies, hoping to gloss it over. "And that and another assault happened in the dark. Hence, why i am also not fond of the dark."
