Ada, or rather Ba'al, since they were the same person, had been stopping by once a day since Tony was hospitalized. Most visits didn't last longer than a short exchange.

Today was different. She somehow managed to get a pizza box in the room and past nurses without being intercepted.

"Eat," she said in a very commanding tone.

Bete Noire claimed this a week for hunger. He eats well the first couple days, appetite whetted, anything that Uhura and Ada bring to the table. But then his skin fits too strange around him, not his own, and he eats less and less and less. He feels like gagging up afterward anything he puts into his mouth, which Tony thinks is a doubly cruel prank for the city to pull.

The bed has been inclined at the head, so he lies back at an angle, head hanging to one side, eyes open, expression strained. Stubble grown in again, with the hair mussed and in need of a wash, his eyes dart around the room, distracted and drawn to every flicker of shadow and light. The city is in his skin, he feels it, a constant itch and the feel of body heat all over. He shifts (squirms) against the pillows at his back ( ... )

"No," Ada replied simply. She appeared quite at ease despite the desperate situation.

"Eat or I shall force it down you," she said and looked sharply at him. "I can assure you, it will not be pleasant." Her eyes glowed for effect.

An unhinged smirk tugs up at the corner of his mouth. "You and Tyki would've gotten along, if you ever bothered. Could've found a shared hobby in teaming up on me, you know, see who got the first scream," he answers.

Gonna be shoved into a padded room any day now. They're gonna lock it up and throw away the key. The Magistrate won't be found in time.

Tyki stopped hurting him like that--except when Tony wanted him to. But that never erased the original memory. The glass, the blood. The gold eyes above him. He thinks he almost prefers that scene to this hospital room, all too clean and white when he knows it's teeming with all the sickness Bete Noire has to offer.

Her eyes glowed again. "I do not share," she said coldly, her voice almost to full Goa'uld.

She crossed her arms and paced to a window. "And it would bring me very little pleasure." For many reasons she wasn't going to explain to a crazy man.

His eyes follow her; he sees all the blackest parts festering inside. He's becoming less a person with a link to the city and more just the city itself in both his mind and body, because he's not meant for these powers. They're taking him over.

"Here I was thinking you considered me your type," he says, and the shadows reach up the walls from the floor and melt into the ceiling over their heads, encasing and enveloping them. His attention twitches to the abandoned pizza box. Hunger.

She let out a little laugh. Were they actually talking about this while he's out of his mind? "In some ways, yes," she admitted as she walked back over to him.

"But there is little joy in breaking what is already broken if I cannot repair the damage so I may do so again. I was revered as a God of life. I destroy to create." Which was more than she was planning to say but she doubted he'd recall this later. It was strangely cathartic.

"I found my... type," she added, "He was taken from me and I do not wish to repeat that sensation."

The filter between mind and mouth has broken down here. Tony searches for a name through his memory. Extremis may be restricted (or protected) from outside connections, but it's still his brain and how he functions.

"Young," he croaks out. And then he chuckles under his breath. "So that's why you've been acting like the angry bride jilted at the altar."

She shot a harsh glare at him. She could deny it, she could threaten. It was hardly worth the time.

"Your behavior is far worse than mine."

Tony only shows another nasty smirk as he rolls his head to the side. He imagines himself sinking through the bed, into the floor, spreading out like water to soak into the city's underground.

He doesn't quite seem like Tony anymore.

"It hardly matters now," she said finally.

Tony turns his eyes up the ceiling, where all the shadows meet and twist above their heads. "Not much usually does," he murmurs. The shadows drip like tar, melting piles left on the immaculate hospital floor.

She fell silent. She decided she would stay a while. She doubted anything she would do would improve his condition.

"You should eat."

"Yeah," he says, distant, "I should."
