The pacing in this installment is excellent! Love the dull tedium of sitting in the heat, watching the hive for two hours and waiting for confirmation that the shield works, in comparison to the riot that erupts at the same location not much later. Great juxtaposition of "happy fun picnic in the console room" as well. The tragic dramatic irony of Amy's "can't we wait a bit?" line did not escape this reader. As soon as the raindrops entered the picture, I knew it was a Bad Thing.
Thank you for having the Doctor attempt the easy answer: just use the TARDIS! Of course, the easy option never seems to work, but I do love that he tried here. It only makes sense.
I'm a bit surprised you opted to call the child "Amelia" - the parallel to Amy is obvious but might be confusing.
