Anyway, so here's my Seven Weeks of Self Promotion, hopefully there will be something entertaining:

The "something I made just for myself" isn't just one thing, but a whole section of my writing. For me, what I made just for myself, was all my
11th Doctor/River Song stories.
They're mostly just tiny little stories a few hundred words long, but I make them mostly for me, because I just love this relationship, it's so wonderfully weird, yet so wonderfully sweet underneath.
The thing is, when I first realized they'd given the Doctor a wife, I was completely against it. I thought it was a horrible idea. I have always liked that the Doctor simply "doesn't do that" and has that sort of blind spot. I always thought it made him wonderfully different, a sort of subtle way of showing that he was alien, from another world, another culture, another species. Most humans are obsessed with sex and romance, so to see the Doctor now being given a wife, I thought, would ruin that aspect of the character for me.
But instead, I think it worked wonderfully. I think the way Moffat set it up made it makes sense to me, within the framework of the show. River isn't a Companion, and she's not "dependent" on him the way Companions are. She is a time traveler herself, and not dependent on him to get her around. She can arrive or leave any time she wants to.
She's a student of history in her own right. Certainly has the ability to take care of herself and fight monsters on her own. And is a completely cheeky, highly intelligent, confident woman on her own. Plus, she's part Time Lord, can regenerate, (presumably) lives longer than the normal human, and shares some of the types of life experiences that normally only the Doctor has had before. (Such as knowing what regeneration and having different bodies is like, how not looking your age is like, having gone through her own hell in her life that has made her stronger, fought her own monsters, and even has a connection to the Tardis.)
In many ways, Moffat basically gave the Doctor a Time Lady, at a time when they (as far as he knew) no longer existed.
And, I felt Moffat did it, (while obviously tailoring River to the Doctor in the writing) in a way that made it believable, or acceptable, that River would be that way. She wasn't just a "Mary Sue" perfect character. She'd gone through hell to gain her abilities and even the Doctor didn't necessarily trust her at first. (She wasn't just the automatic darling of everyone "just because," she grew on them, and they came to know her and respect her even before they found out she was a Pond.)
And I think that setup allows for a lot of story potential between the two of them, in a way that totally bypasses the Doctor's usual reservations about getting involved with his Companions.
Plus, I think it helped that their story and meetings were all out of order. The Doctor usually has reservations about his relationships with humans, because he knows how shortlived they will be, and he assumes it wouldn't work, they'd outgrow him, or he'd get them killed.
But with River, he's presented with a woman who already has had a longrunning relationship with him, and it's apparently worked. It completely bypasses all his excuses. And offers him a tempting look into what could be, if he'll just take the chance. In a way, he gets the advantage no human man gets, the assurance that his wife really will love him until the day she dies.
How can a man resist that? Especially one as lonely and as full of love to give as the Doctor?
So I started to write little stories about them. Bickering, tender, loving, funny, adventurous, ridiculous, domestic, angsty, and romantic, everything I could possibly think of that makes up a relationship and a marriage.
Because I felt like we just didn't get enough of the two of them on screen. They presumably have a relationship that spans 300 years of the Doctor's life. So I decided to fill in a few of those gaps.
Plus, the absolutely awesome portrayal of River by Alex Kingston is a thing of beauty. Both her own physical and somewhat unorthodox (or at least not mainstream) style of physical beauty, as well as the amazing amount of heart she gave River.
And Matt Smith's portrayal of a totally flummoxed 11th Doctor, dealing with his totally confident, energetic, and unabashedly sexy wife, was just awesome! Hilarious, heartbreaking, tender and sweet.
How could I resist?
The Doctor/River relationship has been one of the most original, and heartfelt romances I've ever seen, with the added cachet of the performances, and the wonderful fun of all the scifi elements and screwed up timey-wimey family dynamics.
So I write 11th Doctor/River Song stories just for me. Because they're just too fun not to.
One I wrote especially for me, is "
Grow Old With Me" - I wanted to address the idea in "Angels Take Manhattan" that River thought she had to "hide the damage" from the Doctor. Even up to concealing her broken wrist. That particular thing just never sat right with me, it made the Doctor seem selfish and immature. So I had 11 confront River about it after Amy and Rory are gone. Because the Doctor isn't as young as he looks, he's a mature man, centuries old, with centuries of life behind him. And it hurts him to think he hasn't been a better husband to his wife, that she'd think she had to hide things from him in order to be "acceptable." So he sweeps her up in his arms and carries her to the library where he lays down on the library sofa and holds her tightly in his arms while they hash it out.
It's a little bit angsty and a little bit funny, and little bit tender and just a tad naughty. But I think that is River and the Doctor all over. It's one of my favorite stories I've written for myself. - "
Grow Old With Me."
As for the rest, I've written nearly 200 River/Doctor stories, and have no intention of stopping. If anyone is interested, a full list of my River/Doctor stories is -
here.
For those who have read my stories, what do you think of them? What do you think of my interpretation of their relationship? What are your favorites?
