So, it's been about 6 weeks since my last journal entry. Seems to be about time I posted a new one.
I went on vacation to Southern California with Lori July 19-26. We were both feeling burned out from work, so we took the time off and went to see her family. It was a great trip! :) I'd post more about it but it's kind of a long story. I saw Chris Baumbauer in San Diego, an ex-coworker from when I worked at Purdue's computing center; he works for SDSC now. They've got a pretty impressive collection of supercomputers/clusters. I saw their BlueGene/L, which ranks 63rd in the world as of June 2007, in terms of flops. They also have a (very underutilized) Juniper T640, one of the highest capacity routers in existence, and a 1600A breaker dedicated to the machine room. I wonder what their electricity bill is like. We drove to Orange County, California via Grand Junction and Las Vegas, hung around Greater Los Angeles, then went to San Diego, then drove home via Phoenix and Albuquerque. Drove 2,800 miles in 5 days, 16 hours. Yay for the American way!
Her mom came to visit us a week before that. She's really cool. She co-owns a business that does IT consulting. She was in town to go to the Microsoft conference, make deals etc. We went to Central City, CO and gambled. I lost about $30 of her money. Haha. Gambling is boring and pointless, unless you're bored enough to bother conning naive poker players (you know who you are).
Other than that, it's been mostly work (doing well on that front). Oh yeah, on July 10-11, I got my house's main panel upgraded and had a new subpanel installed in the basement as well as a few 20A circuits for the computers and an 30A A/C disconnect circuit. The A/C was installed July 12. It's been quite comfortable in my house since then.
I had a little scare with my cochlear implant a few weeks ago. I thought it had broken. But it turns out the external magnet wasn't strong enough anymore for some reason. So I replaced it. On the plus side, I got a haircut and scheduled my first doctor appointment and cochlear implant audiologist appointment in 3 years. It's about time.
