A death on Law and Order UK changes everything...
I had been behind on my Law and Order UK viewing, in fact, I had been behind on a lot of viewing due to my craze over Supernatural recently over Season 7 and what happened with my favorite character Castiel, but since the unceremonious and rather lame "exit" of Cas in very early of episode 2 in Season 7, I have decided to take my viewing priorities to other shows that I feel now deserve more attention.
So needless to say, I was unspoiled by the new season of Law and Order UK and imagine my shock and tears to find that my favorite character Detective Sergeant Matt Devlin, played by one of my fave actors Jamie Bamber, was gunned down in a drive by shooting in the cliffhanger finale of Series 5. It broke my heart to pieces! I LOVED Matt Devlin, I loved his enthusiasm, his determination to always do the right thing as a cop, and the way his smile could light up a room. He was the epitome of a good cop who never loses the sight of his duty and he died pushing a 12 year old boy out of the line of fire.
It seems in the last year, I've lost way too many favorite characters to count, from Jesse Cardoza on CSI Miami, to Lucas North on Spooks, to Victor Lord Jr. on One Life To Live, to my beloved Castiel on Supernatural, and now little Matty. But at the very least unlike all those others, Matt's death was a powerful, impactful, and meaningful storyline that spoke to the true core of Matt Devlin's character and his unfailing sense of duty to save lives. Unlike the other deaths where writers were sloppy, inconsistent, and simply wanted shock value or getting rid of an actor, Matt Devlin's death was a hero's death. Sure I want Jamie Bamber to stay on as Matt, but it was his choice to leave, and if Matt had to leave the show in any way, dying in the line of duty and saving the life of a 12 year old boy was the right way for him to go. He died doing his job, doing his sworn duty to protect and defend. CSI Miami, Spooks, One Life To Live, and Supernatural can learn a thing or two from Law and Order UK about how to exit characters without destroying their integrity and core.
I'd rant about how unfair those other shows' characters' exits were but I'd never stop if I start, so I'm just going to say how much I will miss Matt Devlin, and especially his bond with his partner Ronnie Brooks, they were like a father and son duo who would do anything for each other, and seeing Ronnie's guilt at not being at Matt's side to protect him and his grief at losing a surrogate son the day he just welcomed his first grandchild was simply heart-breaking.
Matt Devlin may be gone but he will always live on in my memories! I love you Matty!
