Legilmency + Occulumency
Snape is this annoying guy who has a tendency to read minds without much compunction about morals, or maybe privacy concerns, or... anything else. Worse, he is a master at this particular magical art, and it has served him for years as a spy among people who would do terrible, terrible, terrible things to him if they found out. Same for his ability to occlude his thoughts -- even then, he still had to be careful. This means he's really good at being undetected when he picks up surface thoughts or lower level thoughts -- but digging about in people's minds for the past is a very obvious, hurtful thing that nobody enjoys, especially not when Snape does it, because he's a huge dick about abandoning all pretense of civility and just produces the keys to your psyche and skips merrily in an then mocks you abuot the bulldog later.
He's very likely to casually lift thoughts from people he meets -- not immediately, as strangers in CNC tend to have weird powers of his own, and as someone recently mentioned, discretion is the better part of valor and a smart spy is a live spy. However, once he has an idea of a person's general threat level, he's very liklely to simply lift information he needs because he can and he doesn't like asking for it.
This goes triple if he thinks you're a child who may be in trouble/doing something to upset him, an adult that may put someone under his care in danger, or that you've just taken a whiz in his cheerios recently and he's looking for ammo (this is less likely, as Snape doesn't really need the help in being a dick, but sometimes, sometimes...)
So here's the important part: Snape is a huge dick with mind reading powers. Some of you are not cool with that. THAT'S WHY THIS POST EXISTS.
IF... you do not want Snape to go willy-nilly about your mind, PLEASE LEAVE A NOTE HERE for what characters this pertains to.
IF... Snape CANNOT go willy-nilly about your mind (but you don't mind if he tries and finds that you too keep your mind barred and guarded) please also say so, and what he might encounter; anything else can be discussed if it needs to in the ingame moment it becomes a necessity, but it's always nice to be forewarned.
IF... you have reason to believe that Snape would be detected for whatever reason, please say so, and what guards are in place, so Snape can, if he noses about, become aware of them before he gets really stupid. Snape is not very stupid, so this is important.
IF... you are a-okay and are giving me permission for Snape to be a mind-reading prick, please also leave that note here.
IF... you think you could get past his defenses and roto-rooter his brain right back, please let me know!
