Official league matches. If you want the badge, you need a trainer's license.

Well, it's easy enough to apply. Really, the only requirement is that you have to be ten years old. But a trainer's license gives you the go-ahead to catch and train Pokemon for official league battles.

Well...pretty much. If you're a beginner with Pokemon, though, I'd recommend taking a class or two at a trainer's academy.
