[Hughes has been pulling all-nighters, sometimes because of work, sometimes because he simply can't sleep. He'd been doing a lot of thinking--really careful thinking--and certain previous events have made him question whether or not he should dive back into the Mayfield mystery. He'd told Olivier his two cents, though he told himself he would follow Roy's wishes and stay out of harm's way. Wasn't he just in harm's way walking from the bar? Riza had died, and it could have just as easily been him.
And man, speaking of guilt trips, he was really unhappy with himself on that end. He was aware how important the Lieutenant was to their Colonel--perhaps he knew better than anyone else outside of them. And to think she and the others could die repeatedly by the end of this only made him want to crack this thing.
