Leonard.
THE SUN LEAPT INTO THE SKY TODAY
‘BOVE OUR HOUSE UPON A HILL,
IF FORTUNE’S NOT SENT A SMILE MY WAY
BY THE LOOK OF THE SUN IT WILL!
WHEN THE STAR OF DAY HAS SET,
I KNOW WE’LL LIVE HERE STILL,
IN OUR TACIT, TIDY, TRANQUIL HOUSE ON A HILL.
Oh Lenore, my turtledove it is days such as these that my faith is most affirmed. The palette of our Lord is truly limitless, wouldn’t you say?
(Leonard’s statement is met by Lenore’s incredulous stare.)
Lenore.
IT’S A WONDER YOU CAN TELL DUSK FROM DAWN
IN THIS HOUSE UPON A HILL,
THE DRAPES FOR AGES HAVE ALL BEEN DRAWN
STOPPING LIGHT AT THE WINDOWSILL.
AND THE AUTUMN AIR IS WET,
TAKE YOUR COAT OR CATCH A CHILL,
IN THIS CRUSTY, CRACKED AND CRUFTY HOUSE ON A HILL.
Leonard.
WE’VE A WARM AND WELCOMING FIREPLACE -
Lenore.
THERE’S NO WOOD INSIDE OUR SHED.
Leonard.
AND ABOVE AN ORNAMENTAL VASE -
Lenore.
BUT THE FLOWERS INSIDE ARE DEAD.
Leonard.
WE’VE A ROOF OVER OUR HEADS -
Lenore.
AND IT CREAKS AND LEAKS AND SPILLS…
Leonard.
IT’S AS GOOD AS IT GETS
Leonard & Lenore.
IN OUR HOUSE ON A HILL.
