Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Write ten words beginning with that letter, and tell us what the word means to you and why.

bekkio assigned me "H"

Hello - Um, I just thought this was an appropriate way to start.

Hoe - A few years ago, there was a roommate who inscribed this word in the rather thick layer of dust on my car, effectively dissing me by equating me to a gardening implement. Classic.

Have - For a very long time, I used to dwell on what I didn't have, completely ignoring what I did have. I lost a lot during those years, including my own sense of self. Maybe that's why I appreciate what I have so much now. I have wonderful, supportive people in my life. I have the ability to take care of myself and survive. I have perspective and strength. And I'm thankful for all of that.

Hemoglobin - Every time I come across this word it reminds me of the time we watched "Hemo the Magnificent" in the sixth grade. It was some educational film about blood, but what I remember most about it was my teacher, Mr. Chase, calling it "Homo the Fagmificent." Clearly, political correctness was not a consideration in those days. As a side note, my mom always thought Mr. Chase looked like Charlie Manson.

Hilarious - I'm a comedy nut and this is the word I frequently use to describe something I find really amusing. Generally preceded by the word "fucking."

Habit - I'm a total creature of habit. I can mix it up and be spontaneous, but I'm generally most comfortable when I'm familiar with what I'm doing and with the people and places around me. I think part of it is being a military brat and growing up with so much in my life being temporary.

Hemp - Justin Yates, one of the seniors, began a mentoring program for students interested in pursuing careers in college administration. Here's the genius: he named it the Higher Education Mentoring Program. HEMP. I feel a little twinge of joy every time Donna has to say it.

Halloween - My absolute favorite holiday. The dressing up, the haunted houses, the scary movies - I love it all. Plus, since it's fall, which is my favorite season. There's that little chill in the air and the crunch of leaves when you walk around. Just sets the atmosphere. Halloween also happens to be the title of my all-time favorite horror movie.

Hope - This is something that had been in short supply for me a few years ago. Thankfully, I've managed to find it again. Things will be okay. In fact, they'll be better than before. I'm still working toward a lot of things, but where I once despaired of those things ever coming to fruition, I now know I'll get there in time. I can make it through hard times, even if I have to struggle to do so. It's a cycle - the bad will pass and things will get better. Just need to hold on and believe in that.
