Bremerton never ceases to amaze me.
It seems as if all the money in this town that's been tucked away in quiet rural mansions on various waterfront properties is suddenly surfacing. This phenomenon is especially strange for me, when our family moved here about ten years ago, I didn't understand it at all. I wanted to run away and move back to our yuppy house in Bainbridge Island, but we stayed, and I soon grew to love this brick house and be entertained instead of annoyed with all of Bremerton's quirks and drunk wackos. But everything's changed now! - All the wonderful old dilapidated houses that I pitied for so long are finally being bought for an arm and a leg and being renovated, renewed and beautified. We have an organic grocery store, it's small and adorable, but it's there! Our parks aren't inhabited exclusively by bums and crack-whores, but by children, families! I don't even freak out when I have to walk home at night anymore. I saw three lexus' today. THREE! On one trip! We actually have nice places to dine now, not nearly as many options as Seattle, but somewhere besides The Olive Garden and Red Robin. Ugh.
However, with this great transformation to our fair city comes a few "glitches."
For example, there was a time when I parked my car downtown for TWO DAYS while in seattle for the weekend. Nothing happened. My car was fine, still there, and no ticket. I had to pay SIX FUCKING BUCKS to park downtown today for two hours. Not cool.
As much as everyone loves that damn Cold Stone Creamery, our numerous Starbucks and Anthony's [A beautiful restaurant by the way, went there today.] I fear for our beloved small business folks. What will happen to Westside Burrito Connection? Fraiche Cup? That cool import shop? Hopefully these businesses will actually flourish with all the instant publicity and live action downtown is now receiving, but it is still cause for concern for me.
Nevertheless, Bremerton is a wonder. I will miss things when I move.
*I apologize for this entry, it all started when I saw a sign on the Night Shift that said they were closed for remodeling.
I thought Christ, I don't even know where I am anymore.
