Encouraged by her family, Allen went to the Ballymaloe Cookery School at the age of 18. After graduating from the school she cooked at the Ballymaloe House Hotel, eventually returning first to test recipes and then to teach at the school. She worked for a while as a caterer in Vancouver before returning again to teach at Ballymaloe.

In September 2004 RTE broadcast Allen’s first series Rachel’s Favourite Food, which has been broadcast in Australia, Italy, and elsewhere. A book, Rachel’s Favourite Food, accompanied the series, published by Gill & Macmillan. Two further TV series and books followed, Rachel’s Favourite Food for Friends and Rachel's Favourite Food At Home.

Allen is a frequent guest on Saturday Kitchen, and is one of the presenters on the UKTV Food Market Kitchen show. In 2008, she started her own series called Rachel Allen: Bake!.

Allen has written for many Irish publications including 3 years on Irish lifestyle magazine Image and now has a weekly column in The Sunday Tribune Magazine. She has also contributed to BBC Good Food magazine and AWT At Home magazine. Allen has most recently appeared at Taste of the World for the New York Times as the special guest of the Irish Tourist Board.

Allen lives near Ballymaloe with her husband, also a cook, who runs two restaurants in Cork, and her two sons and one daughter. She has also launched her own line of supermarket products, named "Rachel's". These include the yoghurt range, "Forbidden Fruits" and a few others. Rachel also designs crystal stemware, porcelain dinner sets along with other kitchen and dining essentials for Tipperary Crystal.
