In case it's escaped anyone's attention, our two favourite renegade Time Lords will be featuring in BBC's latest addition to the long line of Doctor Who novels;
Harvest of Time by Alastair Reynolds. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first novel featuring the third Doctor to be released since 2005 (not counting the 50th anniversary re-publication).
After billions of years of imprisonment, the vicious Sild have broken out of confinement. From a ruined world at the end of time, they make preparations to conquer the past, with the ultimate goal of rewriting history. But to achieve their aims they will need to enslave an intellect greater than their own...
On Earth, UNIT is called in to investigate a mysterious incident on a North Sea drilling platform. The Doctor believes something is afoot, and no sooner has the investigation begun when something even stranger takes hold: The Brigadier is starting to forget about UNIT's highest-profile prisoner. And he is not alone in his amnesia.
As the Sild invasion begins, the Doctor faces a terrible dilemma. To save the universe, he must save his arch-nemesis... The Master.
1. Overall, it seems to have some pretty standard Pertwee-era traits: alien invasion! UNIT! Industrial setting! The Master! All we're missing is a good old-fashioned summoning, and there's no guarantee the book will end without one. :P
2. The only thing making me hesitate to buy this is the fact that it can't possibly be as awesomely fanficcy as the summary makes it out to be. That, and the fact that I've never read any of the author's other works; if you have, what did you think of it?
3. The summary clearly hasn't been watching the same show as we have. I'm quite sure the Doctor has saved the Master's life for worse reasons than saving the universe (but summaries are notoriously sensationalist, so I'm not very inclined to think the book will hold the same attitude).
Any spontaneous thoughts/reactions? Yay or nay?
P.S. The trailer for the
Mind of Evil DVD release is up on YouTube, for anyone who hasn't seen it. The colourisation looks rather shiny, and I do love the trailers' attempts at making even the most ridiculous serials appear epic-- although this serial really deserves it.
