I think it's fine if people just want to write fun fanfic or whatever, and I know I'm not as involved with fandom (or Captain America) as you or others are.

I guess I sometimes marvel at the way fandom is very progressive with regards to sexuality, gender, and kink, but hardly anyone talks about race? But I suspect fandom is mostly white ladies (as am I, as you know) so I guess it's not that surprising.

I guess I've been thinking about race more the last few years because for my degree I've done a lot of ~unpacking my white privilege~ and thinking about how to make libraries more welcoming to diverse communities and a lot of it comes down to how terribly white the publishing/children's lit industry is and how that's reflected in the books, and how that's reflected in the interest levels kids of color have in reading. I don't want social commentary, or Afterschool Special Fic, but just fic that engages with the reality I'm working with? But, you know, superpowers, whatever. IDK, I have a hard time engaging with fics that don't feel ~realistic.~

Anyway, I'm well aware that basically everyone is in fandom for the sexytimes and cuddles (which I like too!) and I think that's totally valid. But I can't help but think about this shit too and once in awhile I guess I need to spit it out on Livejournal. But I know it's just not what 99% of fandom wants to talk about, I just... do.
