Oh, Duck! He's deeply hurt and is still thinking about others - he's such a good soul. ::hugs Duck::

But did he want to turn down this simple offer of friendship and confirm for Sandra her fear that she would never truly be accepted on the island?

Thanks for reading, Sam.

Oh god. I'm kinda hating ds_aprilfools right now because most of the WW fics have been about Duck and Dan breaking up! *wails* But when it's done so delicately, so realistically, and with such fine-tuned complexity (as it is here) I'm almost ready to forgive. :-)

I really like Duck's compassion here, and the respect that he has for Sandra. Very Duck-like. Just...can you possibly write some Duck/Dan schmoop? Please? 13 days left for the challenge and I will love you forever if you do! /hollow bribery

I have been so busy writing, I have read only a fraction of the ds_aprilfools fics - other people have been busting up Duck and Dan? Oh, man! We are bad, bad fans!

Duck/Dan schmoop? *looks scared* If I can, I will - but I'm not in love with Dan - it makes it really hard for me to write him sympathetically. I love Duck and Dan together, but I think that's because I want Duck to be happy. Dan is just so... so.... he just slips from my grasp whenever I try to get a hold of his character. I have this problem a lot, that's why I stick to the two pairings I love best of all - if I don't love the character, I can't write him being in love. Does that make sense at all?

*re reads*

That all sounds seriously pretentious, for which I apologise!

But thank you so much for reading and for your interesting comments.

I like to think that if Duck and Dan did break up that Duck's friends would be there for him. I loved the bit about the one plate, one fork, one glass, because that's the kind of self-pity so many single folk go through from time to time.

Well done, but I'm still voting for Duck and Dan making it, beating the odds, and living happily ever after. *g*

I would like to think that too, but Duck, despite his huge heart and his readiness to help others just seems to be so alone - like he doesn't know HOW to take a friendship further - except with Dan. But I have great hopes that Sandra and Buddy and Duck can find a way to support each other as they each learn to stand on their own.

And thank you for your insightful comments. WW fans are a really thinky bunch, aren't they? :-)

WW fans are a really thinky bunch, aren't they? :-

They really are a "thinky" bunch, a lot more so than other fandoms. WW is a movie that lends itself to contemplation of relationships and how complicated life can be, and yet in the end it comes down to the simplicity of connection. We all want that. I think that's why so many of us relate to it enough to want to read or write about it.

Another thing is that WW is one of the few movies I've seen with a gay storyline where the gay characters don't end up dead or as some kind of psycho killer. I appreciate having a movie like that and love the fact that there are others who are actually writing fic about it. Yea! Fanfic!

I think the subtlety of the film is compelling and it just begs for me to try and capture some of that stillness. Also the small town existence against which these everyday events get played emphasises how big they actually are in the lives that they touch. I love that.

And yea fanfic? Absolutely! :-)

Dan makes sense to me in a way -- it's Duck who doesn't. He seems kind of like a stalker in the movie. I can't puzzle out the background that would make him follow Dan around like that when Dan hardly seems capable of acknowledging his existence (understandable in a suicidal guy).

Anyway, I loved this story.

Thanks for the comments.

And I can see your stalker angle - but I think Duck is too innocent for a stalker. He seems to have a genuine need to "fix" Dan - and an empathy for his unhappiness. A bit more backstory on the Duck/Dan thing in the film would have gone a long way.

I'm dead tired and not feeling at all thinky right now, but I just wanted to say how much I liked this. Sandra is a wonderful character and you really illuminated her here.
