Phoenix Wright, age 29. (I miscounted and said 30 in his intro, but I always intended him to be three years post-disbarring.)
Appearance: Unless stated otherwise, he's wearing a white button-down dress shirt with large lapels (think 70's disco reject) and a pair of dress slacks, either blue or black. He occasionally has the beanie on, and if he does, it has several sparkly stars on it and no smile-pin. (I'll mention if he's wearing it.) He's clean-shaven, doesn't bother making his hair in perfect spikes but it does mostly go that way naturally, and wears either beat-up tennis shoes or sandals, depending on mood.
AU Backstory: Canon through a few months after State vs. Gramarye. This includes all of the Mason System investigation scenes.
A few months after being disbarred, he and Trucy went to see the Big Berry Circus, when it was in town. (Maya and Pearl were tired of him moping, and insisted they all go.) Trucy was of the opinion that Max had much to learn, and that she ought to teach him some real magic. So they ran away and joined the circus.
He's working as the ringmaster during shows (though Moe is still in charge of the circus), and handling some of the administrative stuff. They don't let him do the cooking any more except in dire emergencies. He does do a quiet sideline in legal advice for performers -- he can't certify anything, but he can read through contracts and tell people whether or not their actual lawyer is screwing them over, etc. He doesn't play poker except recreationally, and he hasn't touched a piano since high school. He doesn't have the camera pin -- Ema hadn't yet perfected it when he left. (Edgeworth has the camera, set in a very tasteful but slightly vK-esque pin, see below as for why.) Phoenix does still have the magatama.
In an LDR with Edgeworth, who is back in L.A., and is using his position in the Prosecutor's office to do a far better job of investigating the whole forgery issue than Phoenix was doing. They're keeping this quiet for the sake of both the investigation and Edgeworth's career. But everyone who matters to them knows. (The romance is actually fairly new -- his backstory would be almost identical without it.)
He can be somewhat immature -- his life didn't get quite as dark as it did for many after being disbarred, and he never quite found that half-peaceful-half-bitter place that other Phoenixes did. Among other things, this means I'm trying to keep his dialogue style/mannerisms closer to JFA/T&T rather than AJ. He *is* pretty happy, though you can get him to whine about losing his badge occasionally. The circus is like a third family (one being his original family, two the Feys, three the circus)
He's felt like his life was on hold for the past three years -- like some day, everything will magically be fixed, and he'll just resume his former life. (Which, actually, will happen for him. Partly because of the luck that comes with being a Phoenix, but mostly because his Edgeworth is damn clever. I actually do have a fair bit of the AJ storyline worked out for him, but it won't come up in-game except for vague hints because he's not there yet.)
