[Background] Marui is one of the elite regulars of Rikkaidai's middle school tennis team. Rikkai is known for having The Best Tennis Team Ever, steadily defeating every single opponent for years straight-- until they run into Seigaku, that is. Marui and Jackal play doubles against Momo and Kaidoh, and while they manage to win their match, it's not an easy defeat; it takes a lot of effort on both of their parts to defeat Seigaku. And Rikkai ends up losing anyway. Bad Echizen, bad.
Marui usually plays doubles for Rikkai, and usually with Jackal. He's known [and fanboyed over, in some cases] for his prodigy-like tennis skills; he's a very good volley specialist, and can pull off a few outrageous tricks.
Other than that, Marui is generally a pretty normal teenager with a pretty normal life. He lives with his family and goes to school at Rikkai like normal. His team is far from normal, though-- he and the rest of them are all crazy in their stupid, boyish, Rikkai way.
[Personality] More than anything, Marui is incredibly confident in his tennis skills. He doesn't brag to the point of being annoying like Atobe, but he does brag-- telling other characters he's going to show off his tensai-like skills and then proceeding to own said opponents, refusing to take his wrist weights off while playing, etc. Thing about Marui, though, is that he has the skills he's bragging about, so he has good reason to be confident.
Marui is generally pretty laid-back and casual most of the time; he likes to have fun. If you're his friend, he'll tease you and bicker with you, even in the middle of a game ["But your shot will be returned... by Jackal! :D"]. Even after being surprised, he quickly regains his confident air, implying that he's able to brush such things aside. He likes to play around-- he grins a lot, teases Jackal, reverses "yoroshiku" to make it "shikuyoro," stuff like that.
He also tends to be pretty optimistic, even in a pinch. Sure, he gets serious when the situation calls for it, but he'll also be thinking of a way out. In tennis, he's even willing to sacrifice his position as offense to help Jackal down on defense, for the sake of victory. This also reveals another side to him-- underneath his cockiness, he has the determination needed to win.
[Abilities] His tensai-like tennis skills, of course 8D He's a master at serve-and-volleying, and has perfected shots such as hitting the net post and making the ball roll along the net cord, then having it drop into the opponent's court.
...And then there's his supposed ability to eat a lot. Without getting fat.
[Other important stuff] He loves food of all kinds. Especially sweets. And gum. But mostly just food in general.

...Well, at any rate, this is kinda freaky. It's all deserted. *raises voice* Hello? Jackal? Guys? ...Random person I don't know? Anyone??
*insert cricket chirp*
Guess not........ so I'm randomly in a deserted town surrounded by skyscrapers for some reason, and nobody else is around. *this is Marui's "WTF" face* ...Is this a dream? This is probably a dream. Or maybe aliens abducted me or something. That'd make sense. Yeah. *nodding to self* So now I need to find someone else in this place and..... Whoa, hey, a scarecrow! I've never seen a real one before... *ventures over to it*
This is kinda.... *pokes it, then jumps back when it moves* WHOA. Okay, Mr. Scarecrow, down, boy...... okay, yeah, definitely abducted by aliens. I wonder if there are any of them around here so they can tell me where the heck they took me.
