So, I guess it’s official now. I turned myself into a HUGE Supernatural fan. :)
Those of you who watch this show are probably pretty familiar with all the following reasons, those of you who don’t, may find this entry helpful and maybe even inspiring :)
I have to honestly admit that I didn’t like the first season all that much. I found it to be pretty silly, but with the second season, this show began turning into something definitely to my liking. :)
In a nut shell, we have two brothers, Dean and Sam, going from one place to another and killing “monsters”. Both seriously, inwardly conflicted. Both not really able to lead a ‘normal’ life. They call themselves *hunters*. And everything is more or less ok till we start noticing Sam changing. Later we learn that when he was 6 months old, a demon made him drink some of his demon blood and turned him, in that process, into some hybrid. Half human, half demon. Sammy fights with “what’s in his blood”, he fights with his “nature” and he is even led to believe that he’s doing great but.... the stronger he gets the closer to his destiny he is. And his destiny is pretty grim - he’s supposed to be the Lucifer vessel. I have to admit that watching Sammy go more and more into the dark side is fascinating and beautifully illustrates “The hell is paved with good intentions”. :)
This whole plot gets more dramatic when we find out that Dean, his brother, was chosen to be Archangel Michael’s vessel.... so, two brothers are meant to become archenemies in the great, final battle between the good and evil.... the Armageddon days are close and almost about to happen, but..... something happens and you’ll have to find that out for yourselves. :)
Season 4 introduces angels and more demons. At that point I literally started loving this show. Demons are basically what we expect them to be. They are crafty and cunning and astute. Always ready for ‘pacts’. Always willing to give people whatever they want in exchange for their souls. Pretty predictable. But angels..... angels are nothing like what we were taught at our Sunday schools.... They are powerful, emotionless, vicious, unyielding and relentless. They don’t really care for humans. All they care about is their “orders”. They don’t know the meaning of compassion nor sympathy. There’s one angel, however, called Castiel, who tries to be a bit more human-like. He literally doesn’t have a clue what it means but he tries. In time he gets closer and closer to the Winchester brothers, eventually becoming the “third brother”. Willing to die for Sam and Dean and the brothers willing to do the same for him. Yet, ultimately, even he fails. When there’s great power within reach, humans, demons and angels, they all fail alike. All susceptible to so called ‘God complex’. And speaking of whom - there’s no God in the Supernatural world. Basically, he “left because he’d lost his interest in all of his creations”. Nobody knows where he is. Neither the angels nor the demons.... he manifests his being on several occasions though, mainly through resurrecting some of the characters. So He must be somewhere there, but only observing things, not really participating. The Supernatural’s idea of heaven is also worth mentioning. Each soul generates its own heaven, so there’s no one heaven for everybody, just a set of countless ‘personal’ heavens.
There’s another thing that captured my heart - how varied the episodes are. How flexible the writers must be. We get black and white episode resembling an old vampire film, X-files -like episode, we get a western-like episode, we even get an episode when Sam and Dean end up on a TV show set and have to play..... Sam and Dean on a TV show.... Some episodes are hilarious. Some are very moving. And it’s pretty obvious that the writers pay a lot of attention to what the fanbase says.... we have allusions to conventions, to fanfiction even to slash stories..... And Supernatural does get pretty slashy at times..... :))) Especially when it comes to Dean and Castiel. With some of their lines you can literally see the writers’ evilly grinning faces: “Oh, they’re gonna love that!”
What else? The actors of course. Great leading roles of Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Jim Beaver and Misha Collins. And all of SGA actors.... yes! All nicely recycled. Apart from Shep, McKay, Zelenka and Weir, they’re all on Supernatural. At one point or another. All of those guest stars from all 100 episodes... I especially enjoyed watching Todd, Col. Caldwell and Mr. Woolsey :)
I’ve watched as far as 5 episodes of season 7 and I can wholeheartedly recommend this show to everybody. :)
