National costumes

I was looking at my feeds in Bloglines and saw this photo from Shibuya246:

Kids wearing yukata at a local Japanese festival

A yukata is a summer kimono worn during fireworks displays, festivals and other summer events. I super love the floral prints of the yukata worn by younger girls. Older women are confined to wearing bolder and darker prints. I got to wear a kimono during our meeting earlier this year. We had to wear a national costume from a country in Asia Pacific aside from our own. I naturally picked Japan because 1) Japan is awesome and 2) I already have a kimono. Hahaha. The kimono was given to me by my aunt who lives there. Here's what I looked like:

Things I learned about wearning a kimono:
1. Since the kimono has so much fabric, it has a very specific way of folding and wrapping to get the right length and fall. I had to download an instructional material and practice a few times to get it right.
2. You have to wear your socks first before waring the kimono because once you've worn the obi, it's very hard to bend.
3. You can't eat much when wearing kimono. The obi is kinda like a corset without the whalebone.

I kinda find it sad that I have a kimono yet I don't have a Filipiniana outfit. Yes, I've worn baro't saya for school plays but I don't really have that Imelda Marcos-eque Filipiniana I can wear for formal occasions. I'll probably get one when I get older para in case someone gets me as a ninang sa kasal. Lol
