PSA: WIDE AWAKE
IS THE ONLY AMAZING TWILIGHT FIC OUT THERE.
I just cannot seem to click with this fandom, and I find that most fanfic sucks hardcore and is more of a fantasy with edward than an actual solid story with real characters. Edward is (a lawyer, movie star, teacher, student, priest) who is either dating someone (Rosalie/Tanya/Other), or known Bella all of her life (because he is friends with her brother Emmett, or she moves to Forks. She finds herself head over heels for Edward but something (tanya/rosalie/society) keeps them apart. They have a "connection" and then BAM! THEY ARE TOGETHER OMG! THEY ARE MEANT FOR EACHOTHER FLAILS!!ASAFK;!. Seeing the same plot over, and over again is lame. Every single time, because a lot of the fanfic I attempt to read is written by thirteen year old girls who do not know how to use livejournal and need to fangirl for attention because they love RPattz. I like RPattz. I like KStew. I like Twilight and I didn't read the books but I can Wikipedia like a mofo. I think I like Twilight because the story is so epic, timeless. The fanfic that I have read is not. I also find it irritating to read from the first person perspective (adding to the "fantasy" aspect of fanfiction) especially when it's like "EDWARD LOOKED AT ME, AND I FELT GUILTY BECAUSE HE IS DATING ROSALIE. WHO ACTUALLY LIKES MY BROTHER EMMETT BUT HE LURRVES HER" (intuitively, you know that he will not end up with rosalie because it is a edward/bella fic and reading about how they come together in slighlty different situations is dumb)
BUT WIDE AWAKE IS THE EXCEPTION TO ALL OF MY GRIPING, MY FANFICTION PREFERENCES, AND HAS GIVEN ME FAITH THAT THE TWILIGHT FANDOM CAN DO BETTER.
Normally i bitch about how fanfic doesn't connect with canon. and the importance of canon, which is all good and true. but the story is so good here- damn. my heart is palpitating. i feel happy or sad with the characters in each chapter. the most recent chapter was from Carlisle's point of view and I thought that it was mind-blowingly fantastic. Wide Awake is all human, but you really get a feel for the characters, and see the connection to the characters.
There is a whole- movement, group, sub-fandom dedicated to this fic. This fic is everything: It's witty, and it can cut like a knife and the heart of the story is about loss and what can come to you afterwards. This could easily be a television show with cooky-amazing-depressing twilight characters. it could also easily be a story about two lonely teenagers. this is one of those timeless fanfictions that define what it means to write fanfic. People spam her for updates because this fic is like crack. Such a good story. You don't even need to be a twilight fan to like it. (but it does help)
If this message has made you angry I am not sorry. If you genuinely do not see what I am talking about, then please think critically about your fanfiction choices and you will see patterns emerging that are asinine. If you still do not get what I am talking about I am open to discussion of my view. I am not saying that all twilight fanfiction is bad, just the majority of what I have read is bad. I am also all for creative expression, but I also believe that editing and revision are a must. I know I could not write good twilight fiction, so I do not try.
