Who: Ryuuzaki Sakuno and Echizen Ryoma
Where: Sakuno's camp ♥
What: Apologies all around!
When: July 17th
Warning: G

He felt like a hypocrite. A complete and utter hypocrite. He was upset with Momoshiro for overreacting when he had confessed to him, but had his reaction to Sakuno's words been any better? No, not at all. And he honestly couldn't leave it at that. He had taken a day or two thinking about it, and he had come to the conclusion that he really wanted to patch things up between them as fast as possible, even though talking about emotions and whatnot was incredibly awkward for him. He felt that he owed her as much.

That was why he stood at her camp again, two days after he had left in a hurry. The sun was setting behind him and the shadows grew long. His face, however, was even longer as he struggled to find the right words. He really simply should say 'hi', but he couldn't figure out how to start a conversation at all. So he simply stood there, waiting for her to notice him. Incredibly smooth.

Sakuno poked at the fish that was going to be her dinner impatiently. She knew it wasn't done yet, knew poking it wouldn't help, but she couldn't help it. The poor fish was the only thing she had handy to vent her frustrations on. It was just... that idiot. Or was she the idiot? She'd really expected him to say something to brush her off, and that would be the end of it. It should have been the end of it.

What had gone wrong? You'd think after two days she'd have gotten over it, at least a little.

She became aware, quite suddenly, of the fact that someone was standing just outside the circle of light her little campfire cast. "Um..." She said tiredly, not even having the energy to care if it was an axe-murderer or not. "Can I help you with something?"

"You could forgive me?" No, that wasn't the best way to start this conversation, was it? He could have slapped himself. Instead he stepped closer, into the circle of light, shadows flickering across his face. "Forget that. I mean... Hi."

"I'm not sure you have anything to apologize for." She replied quietly, giving the fish one last poke before putting the stick aside. "I...Um. Hi."

He stepped even closer, crouching down. "Nice fish. It's... a bit small." How intelligent. "... Argh! I mean... No, you're wrong. I've gotta apologize. I mean..."

"Well, if I'm the only one eating it, it doesn't have to be a big fish, does it?" Sakuno said, shifting so she was facing Ryoma instead of the campfire. Really, springing 'hey I kind of have a crush on you!' on anyone when they weren't expecting it was kind of mean, so she was pretty sure she was the one who ought to be apologizing. "Um, if you insist, then...you're forgiven?"

"Still, you gonna be okay with just that? You're a bit skinny, you should eat more." Look who's talking. He caught himself, staring down on his own body for a moment, blushing. He hoped the dim twilight would hide the blush from her. "... And. That's good. Thanks. I mean... No, it's too easy! I shouldn't have... I mean..." He cleared his throat. "D-do you really...?"

"Oh, I have fruit too." She pointed at a wide palm leaf fashioned into a rudimentary bowl, filled with sea grapes. "You're one to talk though, isn't anyone feeding you?" She bit her lip and considered his point. "Well, what do you want me to say? 'Grr it's all your fault I have...had a crush on you, rawr?' It isn't, really."

"I eat," Ryoma muttered, the blush not making any considerable progress in disappearing. "And, no, of course not, but... I shouldn't have left just like that. And... Is it have? Or had? I mean... Look, you're pretty. And amazing. And quirky, and fun and..." He sighed. "And a girl. And I..."

"Oh, I know." Sakuno said, offering Ryoma a broad smile. "Every guy I've ever had a crush on has been gay. I've kind of come to expect it."

"... That's kind of horrible," Ryoma deadpanned. "So, uh... Damn, I'm sorry. I mean... Yeah. We're... We're... No, I mean... I don't wanna be the guy who says that 'but hey, we're still friends, right?' and all, but..." He should just shut up.

"Well, we are though, aren't we?" She asked worriedly. They were still friends, right?

"Definitely!" He paused. "I mean... If it won't feel bad for you or anything."

"If my friends are happy, I'm happy. So, if liking boys makes you happy then I don't have a problem." She said, picking up the fish poking stick to check if her dinner was done. Oh, that was a horrible cliche wasn't it? 'If you're happy, I'm happy,' How lame, Sakuno-chan.'

Ryoma's face darkened. If liking boys made him happy, huh? Well, as it was, he was far from happy. He found himself unable to answer, and simply started at the fruit in the makeshift basket, hoping that focusing on that would brighten his mood somewhat.

The silence stretched on between them, the only sound coming from the crash of waves and the crackle of the fire.

"Um..." Sakuno said finally, "Did I say something wrong?"

"Love's shit," he replied eloquently after another stretch of silence.

"Oh..." She pulled her fish off the fire and put it aside on another palm leaf to cool and then stood up to move closer to Ryoma. "You want to talk about it, maybe?" If there was anything she could do to help, she wanted to. Though, given her own track record with relationships, she probably wasn't the best person to offer advice.

"... I kinda like Momo. A lot. And he's... All... 'I'm not gay, there's something in the water that makes people gay, but I'm not, I hope but I'm gonna hang with Kaidoh now because he gives me rainbow colored roses, whee~'" Yes, he might have sounded a teeny tiny bit bitter. And what surprised him all the more was how easily he told Sakuno this.

"Oh..." Going on impulse, Sakuno wrapped her arms around Ryoma's shoulders and gave him a quick hug. "Want me to beat him up for you? I can, you know. I'm tough."

He simply gave her an incredulous look over his shoulder. "Bwah?"

"What? You don't think I can?" Sakuno asked, baring her teeth in what was meant to be a dangerous snarl, but ended up looking more adorable kitten. "I may be little, but I can dead lift my own weight. I pack a punch if I want to."

"Okay. Sure. If you say so." He didn't sound like he believed her for one second. (Such a good friend...) "... But no beating up. He's already got smacked around a lot, and..." He frowned. "I don't like violence."

"If you say so." She said agreeably. "So are there any guys on the island -- other than Mr. Denial -- who aren't gay? A girl's got to know her chances." It was a transparent bid change the subject... or a opening for Ryoma to talk more about Momo. She didn't mind either way.

"... I don't think that guy... A--Aoi? Aoi Kentarou? I don't think he's gay. But I don't know, really. Don't keep track." He made a small face. "And you're totally right about Momo being in denial. Talked with Kirihara and he said something about Momo being so far in the closet he's halfway to Narnia or something. I think... I think that's true."

"I have no idea who that is." Sakuno replied, tucking her feet under her. "Unfortunately, if he is in denial, it...sounds like he kind of has a thing for the other guy, Kaidoh?"

Ryoma nodded miserably. He squatted down and reached for a fruit. "It's okay if I take one, right?"

"Sure, take as many as you want." She waved him in the direction of the basket. "I've got plenty."

"People should just stop falling in love. Or I should. I don't know. I've never been lucky in love either, you know?" He shoved a grape into his mouth.

"We could trade afflictions." Sakuno suggested, leaning over to pull the leaf with the fish closer. "You could fall for gay guys, and I can... Something."

"... Fall for at least bi-sexual guys? Maybe it's a start?" He grinned weakly.

She giggled. "That'd be nice."

He smiled back at her. "Okay, I'll keep an eye out, promise." He got to his feet. "I'll leave you to your dinner now."

"OK...We're not weird or anything right?" Sakuno asked, a little worried. She didn't want to lose a friend just because she might have -- had -- a crush on him. "Don't be a stranger."

"If you're cool with it, I'm cool with it." He reached over to tug lightly on her hair, bringing him closer to her so that he could place a quick kiss on her forehead. "Okay?"

"I am as cool as an ocean breeze." Sakuno said, sticking her tongue out at him. "Now shoo, if you stay I'll feel like I have to feed you."

"Weeeeeell..." No. Bad Ryoma. No mooching on the girl who has only a small fish and some fruit to feed herself. He sighed heavily and waved his hand dismissively. "Okay, okay. I'll go. See you tomorrow, okay?"

"Sure." She smiled. "If I'm not here, I'll be in the woods, murdering trees for my wicked plans."

"I'll make sure to mourn the trees."
