Bond Targets $450 Million at Global Box Offices...and a possible name for the next film...

Dec 16, 2002 11:50

The 20th official mission of British agent 007, now playing in theaters, is expected to reap $400 million to $450 million in global ticket sales, more than any other Bond movie, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Chief Executive Alex Yemenidjian said at a conference in New York on Wednesday.

The movie -- in which Bond, played by Pierce Brosnan , saves the world from a megalomaniacal North Korean military officer masquerading as a British diamond merchant -- has already sold $120 million worth of tickets in the United States and Canada in its first three weeks of release.

MGM's projection would make the film the hottest Bond outing ever by sheer ticket sales dollars. After adjusting for inflation -- ticket prices were much lower in the 1960's -- it would be the best in years but closer to the middle of the pack for all Bond films.

The fourth Bond film, "Thunderball," released in 1965, reaped the equivalent of $807 million in today's dollars, according to a recent report in Time magazine.

In recent years, MGM has tried to release a Bond movie about once every two years. But Yemenidjian said that was too fast in this case due to the strong success of "Die Another Day."

"We are going to take three years to do the next one, because if this one does $500 million in worldwide box office, the next one should do more," he told the investors at a UBS Warburg investors' conference.

"I think there is a very big risk in rushing these things and screwing up the value of your franchise," he added.

In interviews to promote the film last month, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson said they would not even begin working on a new Bond script until early next year.

MGM had been extremely careful with production of "Die Another Day," and the character Jinx -- Bond's curvaceous new love interest and U.S. agent played by Oscar winner Halle Berry (news) -- has helped excite a new generation of Bond fans, Yemenidjian said.

Bond alone is a huge part of the value of MGM, which has a library of about 4,000 films, including the 20 official Bond films that began in 1962 with "Dr. No."

CASH FLOW AHEAD

Yemenidjian said that over the next four years, MGM overall aims to make a little more than $2 billion in operating cash flow, which should leave it with about $800 million in cash after spending $1 billion on film and television production and $230 million on interest.

"If all of our films just break even over the next four years on average, then the $800 million in free cash flow goes down to $400 million in free cash flow," he said.

Free cash flow does not include amortization and depreciation costs, and the projection does not take into account the $250 million MGM is receiving for its 20 percent stake in the Bravo cable network. General Electric Co.'s NBC bought the channel for $1.25 billion from MGM and Cablevision Systems Corp..

MGM owns 20 percent of cable TV network American Movie Classics, and the purchase of more cable outlets to boost the distribution of MGM-owned movies and television shows remains a top studio priority, Yemenidjian said.

Widespread speculation is that MGM would like to acquire the remainder of AMC or, at least, a controlling interest from Cablevision.

Yemenidjian has said in the past that MGM would be interested, but only at the right price.

"A 4,000 film library will do better if it also owns a 24-hour film channel," he said on Wednesday.

So should we all hope Bond does not too that well worldwide, not 500 million anyway, lets forget about praising Die Another Day's boxoffice, and hope it does worser, because that it seems, weird enough the faster way to get Bond 21.

I don't get it, that would be 2 bond films in 6 years!!!
Pierce is definately making 2005 as his last year of Bond then.

Although I think its too early for official statement, lets pray DAD does less well world wide then what that MGM guy is hoping.
Were all aging.

I don't get it, I thought it doing well, would make them get Bond 21 out sooner, so next time a Bond film comes out, we should hope it does less well, for a 2 year gap very strange, quality I think suffered anyway, with some cgi shots, with the 3 year break, 2 year break is enough at least for Bond 21, Brosnan is in his prime now, but seems they think 3 years is like 3 months, but it ages away, and your top Bond actor is talking about age, get him to do 2 more! Make it sooner. But is a rumour so who knows.
Article also says, recent years we've had Bond film every 2 years, nothing too recent about the 3 year wait after TWINE, that was a long time ago.

I think after the dad DVD is released, I can't imagine spending rest of 2003, 2004, and all of 2005 until the fall talking about Bond 21, DAD was a good Bond film, but hey, it wasn't perfect for me-cgi shots are proof of that, 3 year wait is nonsense.

With some research:

Albert R. Broccoli Present's Sean Valen as Ian Fleming's JAMES BOND 007 in Raymond Benson's 21st bond; Never Dream of Dying.

Hmmmmm...althought like a Beta programme, this name has not been set yet, and so could change...

i guess its going to be a long 3 years, so all we can do is just sit back and play our old bond movies1-19 and #20 when it comes out and just be patient

Therefore at this rate we should be on bond number 25 by the year 2017, or there-abouts...

Some of you will get your wish as Timothy Dalton comes back...but as the villain. Either Shirley Bassey or Tom Jones will do the song. Brosnan will beat the living daylights out of Dalton, and box office will be boffo, prepare for Bond 22, and Hugh Jackman coming in! Hehehe

Who knows the possible locations for Bond 21?...Please tell me...

in 2004 there is too much movie's behind Bond.

But there is one change and that's bad news for the Other movie's in The Summer that can you see in that thread.

The release of Hp 3 is in The summer i don't know when.
But i think there change it again in The netherlands to November 25 2004.

In The summer is not possible,we have the release of Starwars 3 in may 2005.
Follow in Augustus with The Hulk 2

But we have mabey Problems with 4 part of Harry Potter at the end of 2005.
Mabey there change the release of Bond to 22 December 2005 or again to January (2006).
