Happy Valentine's Day, folks!

Anyhoo, as a V-Day gift and as a way to hopefully give myself something to do, I've stolen this writing meme thing from slartibartfast and...well, the first five comments for sure, but I may keep going.

Pick two fandoms and a word limit of anything under a thousand words. I'll write a ficlet of exactly that length with whatever ( Read more... )

"No," Rory says, shaking his head.

"What do you mean, no?" The Doctor asks, turning away from the TARDIS door and towards him.

Rory points out the door, flails his hand a little and says, "I mean no. To that! I can accept the cloud fish, the planet made of something that tasted surprisingly like raspberry jam, but that? That can't be real, it shouldn't be real."

The Doctor frowns at him. "Why?"

"It's a flat world," Rory says, "Balanced on top of four elephants on top of a turtle. There is no way that's real."

"Oh." The Doctor says, "But a round ball wherein nobody falls off makes perfect sense?"

"Yes!" Rory shouts, "Yes, it bloody does! I mean, I don't know the whys or hows, but there's science and everything! Nothing in science can explain how a great big bloody turtle and four flipping elephants can survive in space!"

"Maybe not your science," the Doctor answers, turning back to the planet the TARDIS is currently hovering above. "The philosophers and academics of Discworld, of course, don't bother so much with the how, as the why and where and sex -- as in, why does Great A'Tuin keep travelling? Where is he or she going? Oh! We shouldn't definitely visit Ephebe, the philosophers there know a good party."

"It has a name?" Rory demands, and the look the Doctor gives him for that one is almost downright pitying.

"Everything has a name, Rory Williams," he says.

"You don't."

"I'm the Doctor."

"Boys," Amy says, coming up behind them. "Are we just going to stand here and argue or are we actually going to go down and have a closer look?"

"We'll go," the Doctor says, closing the door and hopping up to the console. "First to Ankh-Morpork."

"Whatever you say, Doctor," Amy smiles, then, "Oy! Rory!"

"It shouldn't be real," Rory mutters sullenly, but joins them at the console.

The planet doesn't seem any more real up close. Rory feels like he's walked into some kind of World of Warcraft simulation, even with pain radiating up his leg from where a dwarf -- honestly, a dwarf -- had hit him in the knee after he'd accidentally stepped on the guy? girl? (there was a beard, but also a shimmering dress and eyeliner) because he was too busy staring up at a troll.

"I must've actually gone insane," he murmurs, and yelps when Amy hits him.

"Shut up," she says, "This is no weirder than any other planet."

She's lying though, Rory can tell from the way her fingers curl around his elbow. She's putting on a brave face for the Doctor, but she's just as freaked out as he is.

"Hey mister, you look like a hungry fella. How about a sausage inna bun? I can see you're new to the area; you've got that philosophising look about you. Tell you what, eh, I'll give you my Ephebian discount which'll sell this at such a low price that it's cutting me own throat."

"Ah, no thank you, Mr. Dibbler," the Doctor says, clapping Rory on the shoulder. "We're in a bit of a hurry. The reality is shifting."

"The magicians have been trying to fix that all week," Mr. Dibbler agrees.

"Magicians?" Rory asks.

"Yes," he says, bouncing on his toes and wearing that smile that means adventure. "Let's go see what they're up to, hm?"
