Slow cooked Pork Belly Stew

This is based on a recipe ihlanya gave me :).

Ingredients
  • Stew pack of veg from Morrisons (small swede, large parsnip, 3 carrots, 1 onion) - but you could use anything you happen to have
  • 2 large potatoes
  • 1 belly pork joint (doesn't matter what size, just enough to feed however many)
  • 1/2 bottle cider (~250ml)
  • 3/4 pint ( Read more... )

Oh definitely yes - the Christmas Bazaar is at the end of next week, which is what I am making all the sweets for :)

OK :) (This is actually written down on a tiny piece of notebook paper, that's been screwed up, folded, had the fudge made next to it, so it's a bit stained... you get the picture :D ( ... )

OOOOHHH I'M FAMOUS!!!!!

*twirls*

250ml of cider? Haha, I use about a litre and just crumble the oxos into it. No water added. Mind you, mine feeds about 5 adults.

But isn't the pork so amazingly tender and yummy? It's one of my favourite dishes and so easy.

LOL - I didn't have that much cider :)

Well I think mine would have fed at least four had it not been for the fact Rob was ravenous - he ate over half the pork all by himself.

Oh god, it's so good! I have the left overs for lunch.

You can buy these 2 litre bottles for about £2. I empty a lot of the cider in and then have a glass while I'm cooking.

See why I love my slow cooker? :D It makes my cooking look like I actually know how to cook!

You can make a gorgeous risotto in about 2-3 hours too....

I had a bottle of the more expensive type cider - they didn't seem to have much else in Morrisons (probably looking in the wrong place :)). I wasn't sure how strong it would be so I only used half ... and might possibly have drunk the rest ;)

Is that the risotto recipe in the booklet that came with it?

Is the cider you used alcoholic? I'm going to try this recipe, but I'm from over the pond and I think I read somewhere that "cider" is generally assumed to be alcoholic on your side of the Atlantic, where we Yanks specify it's "hard cider." Should I use the nonalcoholic cider I already have?

Sorry if this question comes from out of the blue, but I'm excited to try this recipe. I love pork belly and didn't think ib was something I could make at home!

Yep, the cider is the alcoholic version - not sure what the non-alcoholic version is like, so I wouldn't know how they compare taste wise. All the alcohol boils off during cooking, but I couldn't say how it would turn out if it wasn't there in the first place. I used a medium dry cider.
