Books for Lina

I'm making a list of books and movies for my niece. I wish I could afford to buy them all for her, but I'm poor! :-)

Descriptions will be behind the cuts.

Books

The Book Thief is an amazing book. I think it should become one of the modern classics and be taught in schools. It's a book narrated by Death, which tells the story of a young girl who steals books during Nazi Germany. It's an amazing account of ordinary Germans during WWII, but without having a historical feel to it.

I'm so excited for the fourth and final book to come out in September. These books are a great fantasy read. The one that I really enjoyed (but was quite disturbed by) was the third, The Crow. Basically, the brother of the main character gets locked into a concentration camp for kids, where they are kept in a perpetually drugged state to make them mean and aggressive and fighting machines. The Nameless One is using these kids to fight in his armies against their parents, which, of course, is demoralizing, and it makes the parents surrender and be killed rather than be killed by their own children. All of the books are amazing, but it was truly the third that I consider to be superb.

Believe it or not, I read this book for my religious ethics class at uni. It's supposed to be about rabbits...and yet, it's not. It's about different types of government. It can be a very terrifying book. And yet, I think it's one that people should read.

Yes, this is a religious book. But it's a good one. I really enjoy the Gita. I love Krishna and Arjuna and their friendship.

I read this one as a kid, too. It's on the list of banned books. I don't really get why. I just find it be sad. It is very touching, though. I think we all wish that we could find a place to escape to with our best friend.

Another book that I read in middle school. Fascinating. It's about a world that is all the same: no color, no choice, no music, no history. Find a way to overcome that.

I read this in about 9th grade. Then I had to re-read it for senior English. It wasn't nearly as good the second time I had to read it. I think it's because I resented Kohser taking the fun out of it. But the first time that I read it, I really enjoyed it. I would hate to live in a world where books are burned! Just look at this list!

I think it's compulsory in a lot of schools, but in case it's not, READ IT!

A very serious book that looks at the violence of kids taking guns to school. My only complaint...normal people don't talk like this.

I read this book when I was in 5th grade, and I haven't read it since. I just bought it again, and Lyndon is currently reading it before I get to read it. It's another book that deals with the Nazis. A young Jewish girl travels back in time to Poland where she is the only one that understands about the concentration camps. A very compelling read.

My sister, Lina's mom, bought these for me for my 10th birthday. I immediately fell in love with them, and I've read them hundreds of times. I still have the first set that was given to me by Bobbi. They look like they've been chewed by a dog. I love Narnia. It's where I always imagined my perfect life to be as a kid. I would say that they are the first books to ever let me escape reality.

I read this in middle school, I think. It really highlights the racism during the 1930s in Mississippi. It is narrated by a young black girl who asks a lot of questions as to why things are the way they are.

This is more of a photography book than anything. Michael Franzini went around the States and photographed 100 teenagers, 2 from each state. Some of the people that he found are very interesting. And the portraits are great. It's really good photography and a great book.

This one is about demons. Everyone has their own personal demon who is supposed to ensnare you and trap you in sin. Wormwood writes to his uncle Screwtape for advice on the best way to get his human to fall, especially since he has just become a Christian.

A young girl sees the murder of her father and then runs away. She cuts her hair off and then joins the choir in York. She's scared that the murder was organized by Queen Elizabeth and that her life is also in danger. A nice book that is set in Elizabethan England with intrigue and death and plotting and politics. I read this one in 6th grade, and it became one of my favorite all time books.

Seriously, if you haven't read this one, you're living on another planet. When his plane goes down, Brian is forced to fend for himself with just a hatchet on a small island somewhere around Canada. Good fun.

This book made me want to run away from home and live in the forest. This is another survival type book based on a young boy who leaves his house, makes a home in a New York forest, befriends a falcon, and learns survival skills.

This book is definitely not a young adult book, but it's still on my favorites list, which I think Lina should read. It's based on a true story of the Mirabal sisters in the Dominic Republic and the part they played during the revolution.

Anarchy. Enough said.

Hilarious! Bartimaues is a demon. Sort of. He's super funny. His footnotes are the best. Another fantasy series that I think is brilliant.

Another book about demons. This one takes some work to get through, but it's really good.

Anna goes to Siam to tutor the king's family. A look at the life of a polygamous king and his family. Very different to the movie, however, which I also enjoyed.

I think this is enough books for now. So, we'll move on to:
