I have just returned from the vet to have Trillian, one of our pet rats, checked out, and I'm sad to say that she's been put to sleep. She seemed to have been losing control over her rear end over the past weeks, and getting difficulty keeping her balance. More recently, her appetite withered away and her fur started to look less well kept. Just before I took her to the vet, I noticed crusts of porphyrin (a reddish substance secreted at the eyes) around her eyes. The secretion itself is quite normal, but not in these amounts and not without the rat cleaning her eyes. Seeing how fast she had worsened over the past few days, I had to agree with the vet that this was not going anywhere good, so he put her to sleep. Tric (wyldirishtric) already told me before she went to school that if the vet didn't see any chance of improvement and adviced putting the rat to sleep, I should go ahead. I'm sure she would have preferred to accompany me though, but that's how things go.

Sleep sweet, Trillian.
