On tailgating and warnings

A while ago, while I was driving to a job interview, I overtook a few trucks on the highway. While doing so, I was tailgated by a woman that came so close, that I couldn't even see her headlights in my rear view mirror anymore. ( Read more... )

From my experience, tailgaters already have a high level of aggression - they will not let you off if you are signalling them, no matter what you do.

I really hate them myself, and while I was in Germany there were a ton of accidents caused by them. And German highways are bloody dangerous and crazy as it is.

I agree getting slower is not a good idea. Nor is getting faster, because this will just make you even more stressed than you already are by the tailgating and be very dangerous. What I generally do when I notice somebody is tailgating me is to stop looking in the rear mirror and carry on what I am doing (and try to get into the right lane as soon as is posssible by the traffic situation). I'm highly stressed by any car behind me anyway (hell, I am highly stressed by more than one car except me on the road!), and if they hit me, it's THEIR fault and therefore their problem. I really don't think I can do more than that.

Sucks, I know.

Yeah, I usually just think "if they run into me, it's their fault, not mine", but I'm not particularly waiting for the fuss involved with insurance, not to mention any bodily damage it may cause me if they do hit me from behind. Still, there's probably not much one can do to make them change their behaviour.
