Fight Club. I’ve been avoiding this film. I assumed that it was about young men finding themselves and some sort of truth through violence, blood and brute force. I assumed it was about an undercover club where fighting took place between club members, just for the sake of violence. I imagined that the only other aspects of the film were the secret nature of the club, how it got started and possibly how it ended. Not bad just from the title and a few scant details, how wrong could I be!
The other day I was surfing the channels on my sky box, when I stumbled onto this film. At first, I had no idea what it was, but was drawn in by the narration. A clearly intelligent person, working a regular white collar job who was starting to ask questions about his life and its meaning. Starting to get a little rebellious. Actually, the narrator, also the principal character in the film played by Edward Norton, was visiting self help groups for terminal illnesses. Stuff like testicular cancer, even though he was fine. It was all the suggestion of his analyst, in an attempt to cure his insomnia. It was working and was all fine for a while, until this women started turning up to the same groups, hooked on the same mixture of helplessness and hope. He spots her, know’s she a fraud just like him, and they start to argue. Then the Brad Pit character turns up, and his apartment explodes, and from there it gets interesting.
Watch the film if you get a chance. With luck, like me, you will have passed on it till now. There’s one heck of an ending, but you have to watch all 139 Minutes to
