Martial Arts and Verbal Defense

I've been reading an interesting book call "The Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defense". The book has a lot of comparisons to martial arts and shows you how to identify and deflect attacks. This morning I had a full on attack from a department downstairs directed at me. I used a few techniques out of the book and successfully blocked the attack. The other computer person in our group was furious over the attack and was suggesting I retaliate by contacting several people and pointing out their failures.
If I followed his suggestion, I would have escalated the situation and fell into the trap. Ironically, I have enough ammo to destroy the department and get a few people terminated. Some of the people at work think I'm a bit wimpy when it comes to dealing with people. Of course, it's just like being in a bar fight. Do you let the other person intimidate you into the fight or are you strong enough to walk away?
In terms of verbal abuse and attacks my boss is one who metaphorically beats his employees just for being in his presence. He's a victim of his own success. By doing so well in his life, he doesn't know how to handle failure and takes out aggression on his staff. Aka the blame game.
