Finally, I have an internet connection so I can tell you all of my adventures.
Yesterday we went from Nairobi to Ishmara. Before we left, we went to the Canadian High Commission and met with the ambassador, he was surprisingly young, but very nice.
The drive over was very nice. I got to see a lot of the surrounding area. It’s both beautiful and heart breaking. You see people waiting to get into Mombas, taxi vans that stuff 14 people into the back ad drive dangerously fast. There are also people walking, everywhere. You never get a stretch were nobody is walking. Often you see the women carrying things on their backs. They so large, and look very very heavy. I’m not sure how they do it.
This morning we went for an hour long walk in the morning. It was so very nice. The children walking to school waved and ran away. They’re amazed by us Muzungos (a word meaning white people), and they stop and stare a lot. It’s quite nice. I’ve said Jambo so many times today, but the people here are so friendly. Again we saw the women carrying those heavy loads on their backs. Their over 150 pounds (some of them) and the women walk for miles.
After breakfast we were in meetings. We went to visit a farm at which they had a biogas generator. The generator takes in cow dung and water, and after a fermentation process produces methane gas. They use this gas for cooking, it cooks clean, and is much safer for the women. (smoke has damaged their eyes and lungs). FHF has two test generators here in Mukurwe-ini, and are about to install 50 more in the coming year. We hope that they can be improved to produce enough gas to light the houses at night.
The man who owned the farm also happened to be the chair of a school nearby that FHF works with, so we went to visit. The children were so sweet and happy to see us. We took pictures and they thought that was so fun. They wanted to touch my arms and hair. They could speak only a little English, and all wasted to shake my hand. They were so sweet. It was the most amazing experience. It also broke my heart however, to see how little they had in their school. FHF has done so much for this school, but I know there is so much they don’t have. The students are so much better behaved then Canadian students (a generalization I know), but it was true. They went back to their classes after the bell rang, and the teachers weren’t there, but they sat and waited anyway, it was surprising.
We are attempting to set up our internet in Ishmara house, but maybe it will work, maybe it won’t, Here’s hoping to talk to you all soon.
Habari.
