I'm Up Late As It Is...

Oct 10, 2005 02:26

Well, twenty minutes ago I finished up on my fourth hour of overtime at the station. Yes, it's 2:20am right now, and we had some incredibly big breaking news. Something that even got me out of my apartment, over to the station to grab my camera, and onto a crime scene.

Apparently, two guys stabbed a bunch of people over in the Empire district of Coos Bay. (I know that doesn't mean anything to most of you, but just humor me for a moment). The reason I found out about it was because of the dozens of sirens and horns I heard blaring from my apartment as I was moving some stuff out of my car. I decided, on a hunch, to turn on my police scanner, and lo and behold, there's been a murder and 3 stab victims. Man.

As I was driving over to the crime scene, I thought, okay, this is a huge story. So big that I was SOMEHOW motivated to work on a Sunday night instead of getting sleep. I see it as an incredible blessing that I actually stumbled upon the story, but it's also very sad. News is so tragic and so dark sometimes, but people want to be informed. And I think what I see in this small community is that people are obviously interested in what's going on next door with their neighbors, or just down the street at the grocery store, where a few people happened to be stabbed. I know anyone would be interested in that anywhere, but it really makes me feel like I'm serving people by informing them of something that happened. And that actually makes me feel like what I'm doing is worthwhile.

So, 60 dollars later (overtime!), I'm back at my apartment and just kind of in shock at what happened. Still trying to get to the tired part of my evening, but it's just not happening. I have to get up in 6 hours, so I suppose I should close, but man oh man. What a crazy night.

Anyhow, now that I have the "internets" and some cable tv, I'll be able to catch up on my favorite shows (LOST, ALIAS, SURVIVOR, Prison Break, Amazing Race) and start occupying some time here.

Oh, and Sarah and I are going to The Lion King next weekend. Four hours in the car with her? Should be an interesting ride.
