i've been feeling a little bit like jonathan safran foer in everything is illuminated but sans all the jewish ancestry. every place we visit has some sort of historical significance, whether it's my mother playing hide and seek there as a child or people being rounded up for concentration camps there during world war deux. i suppose it's hard to imagine being in a ghost's shoes. and there's a strange neutrality that's settled in those places that i can't quite decipher.
my favorite part about the trip is finding people with the same tendencies that i have, like not killing bugs or not liking water or melting when they see animals. our left hands are the designated petting hand because we encounter so many puppies and horses.
on a lighter note, people here smoke like chimneys. i've inhaled enough secondhand smoke that i can cough up charcoal for your grilly mcgrillgrill.
