I just watched the Charles Gibson interviews with Sarah Palin. The thing that struck me is how aggressive she is. She wants to win, and she puts a kind of raw, focused energy behind it.

The other thing that struck me was that, although she's smart, she's no intellectual. She learns what she needs to learn to accomplish her goals, and not much more. Rather than fostering a life of the mind, she's really action-oriented.

In the Myers-Briggs, I bet she'd come up as ESTJ (extroverted, sensing, thinking, judgemental). Perfect personality for a super-hero. Not perfect personality for someone who has to navigate the many gray areas of public and international policy.

There was a really good piece in either the NYT or Salon last week about the fact that conservatives understand liberals but choose to be conservatives. But that liberals don't understand conservatives, and are just angered by them.

I'm listening to so many people go off about Palin. She's like a blue screen for projecting all kinds of hopes and fears.

I think she's just a type, which is another sort of projection, I guess. But it's a type that would be great to take camping, or to give a big project to, as long as she can be reassured she's going to get a big power or fame kick out of it. And as long as the agenda is not complicated by having to consider anyone else's feelings or needs.

There is only one thing that really gives me the creeps about her. And that is imagining the conversation that someone had with her daughter's boyfriend about his future. That young man looked like he really didn't want to be at the convention.
