Guantanamo Bay is an embarrassment to the principles we as a nation's citizenry are meant to uphold. Before we can begin to keep our heads up high, we must recognize that the government is servile to the Constitution, and the Constitution forbids government from pursuing indefinite waivers of certain fundamental judicial procedures, meant to preserve not only the rights of citizens, but the integrity of their government.
As an American born and raised, I am disgusted to think that my government, under whatever leadership, could have endorsed, explicitly or tacitly, methods and modes of investigation and prosecution that said government would not have dared use on its own citizens. We are better than that, and I, for one, am willing to face a little extra risk so that our way of life may be protected. That way of life, to me, is irreconcilable with the actions and policies that Guantanamo's prison camp has come to symbolize, and, with its continued existence, perpetuate.
