Writer's Conference 2011
One of these days I will remember to post after the event.
I had a good time this year at Lakeland's Writers Conference. Well, I always do but I always look forward to learning something new and meeting other writers.
We met in the lecture room where they did the introduction and we listened to an author who wrote a memoir. It was nice to listen to what he had to say. I probably won't write a memoir though. If I write anything close to my life, it will end up fiction. I do have a couple ideas and you know though, I'll find a way to stick the paranormal in there.
Afterwards, my first session dealt with Young Adult. Yes, I don't write Young Adult but I've thought about it. I do enjoy many young adult books and would love to find the teenager in me again. I don't know when I'll write one but I know when I think of an idea, it's going in my idea notepad so when I'm ready I can look back.
The second session, I decided to do Today's Publishing. I'm always trying to keep up with the publishing world even though I'll probably self-publish my first book. I still like the idea of traditional publishing and will try to look for that agent and publisher. I'm one of those people who like to try different things. Maybe I'll discover self-publishing isn't for me but traditional is. Time will tell.
After that session, we had lunch. Yup, like every year it's like high school. You walk into the lunchroom and don't see anyone you know. There are some of us regulars but it's good to look for new faces. You have to network. At the table I sat at, I met some nice people and I hope to read their work someday. I sat with a mystery, autobiography, romance, and general fiction writer.
After lunch, we headed back to the lecture room and did a question/answer panel. This year, it went from getting yourself published to ebooks to writing for a living. Definitely something I found very useful. I wish I could have the motivation to write for a living but for now, that will have to wait.
The last session I did had to deal with editing. That as always was a good one. I'm always looking for ways to edit my work better. There were a few familiar lessons. The read out aloud, don't trust spell check, etc. I never thought about reading a paragraph here and a paragraph there. I like the idea of reading the book out of order. Will have to keep that in mind.
