I am honestly not sure whether they're coding Freddie as gay or not, because I could totally be down for them being gay/straight lady soulmates, but i can also see them as long term hetero soulmates. And also shipping them. It could go many ways.
But (as is less common for me) I'm actually much more curious about how their job stuff and the conspiracy stuff goes. P)
It definitely occurred to me that Freddie could be gay - that moment with the cop and his odd interactions with his assistant. But whatever their relationship ends up being I full of admiration of how well it was set up and how important it was shown to be. There is years of stuff between them and it's clearly not an easy friendship. I am full of hope for complicated feelings and fights and being there for each other when it comes down to it.
(But yeah. They could get drunk and hook up and I would not be unhappy (I kind of think they already have but they just get so frustrated with each other that they drift back into being friends).)
I think the appeal of the relationship is that it's damn messy while still being adult - they aren't teenagers masquerading as adults like so many other TV shows. Whatever it is, it's complex. And so many other TV shows manage to be compelling when it comes to the characters' work drama and then screw up the relationship stuff. So if The Hour can continue to do both I shall be thrilled
