A lost dog, covered with burs and scratches and mud, found his way to the home of a single Mom living with her 20 year old autistic son. Her son's autism was much more profound than Ben's - he couldn't utter a word at all and didn't seem to understand any. But he and the dog made an immediate connection, the dog sleeping on his bed at night, and following him everywhere.
Seeing the attachment, the mom explained as simply as she could that since the dog had a collar, someone owned him, and they'd have to put up signs to find the original owner. The look on the boy's face said he did understand, and even helped his mother put up the signs. Still, weeks passed, and no one answered the flyers.
One day, when the mother was leaving to pick up a few groceries, the dog went nuts, throwing himself at the door and barking as loudly as he could. The mother wasn't too far away, so she rushed back into the house, where the dog lead her to a horrifying sight: Her son was having a massive seizure. Blood was running out of his nose and mouth, and the hospital informed her that had she called 911 a few minutes later, she likely would have lost her son. Home again, boy and dog were reunited...
...Until there was a knock at the door. A relieved looking man was holding one of the papers that the mother and son had put up. The dog was his.
After loading the dog into the car, the man turned back to the target of his whimpering dog: a boy standing silently in the doorway, tears running down his face. He stopped the car and opened the door.
Given the "go ahead", the dog sprung into the boy's arms. "Ma'am, your son needs him more than I do. I know you'll take care of each other." Then, empty handed, the man returned to the car.
