As you all know, I am a music fan. I do like to play, at yet at the same time have limited confidence in my work.
A week ago, I started a music project with a good friend of mine here in New Zealand, Lee Wallace. This basically was something we wanted to do, but finally penned something the day after a drunken discussion with Dan Bosher (Decortica) about the feel of our first track. In the space of 48 hours, we created six tracks - two of which spoken word.
Now some people wanted to hear how we sounded, so we made a seven track CDR for a few people, containing a track I wrote years ago called "Sigh Of The Times", and word spread amongst our circle of friends about how good it was, and how funny some tracks were. Even Ant Whitton, from Verdant Skies (who, at this point, I cite as a major influence - Verdant Skies that is), who at times can be quite critical of music, said it was pretty good and he liked it.
What happens next? That fictitious quote from someone who has quite the following and 'street' credibility with the scenester types we basically were mocking ("Trance-punk", I mean c'mon!), becomes part of a scenario of life imitating art.....
TRANCEPUNK HAS ARRIVED... IN STYLE
Greasy Housewife are an Auckland indie electronica duo who describe their sound as, among other things, " E Smith and John Cooper Clarke having an orgy with Kerouac on more drugs than usual while reading James Joyce". They have also made up a Cheese on Toast quote on their MySpace and now, as life imitates art Cheese on Toast actually says the quote. [25 Jan 2007]
That was a main news article on
http://www.cheeseontoast.co.nz, which basically is viewed by a tonne of music fans (a fair few elite, might I add) each day. Andrew Tidball (sp?) has a lot of stroke within the music community, and is someone I tried to submit some writing to. I get a MySpace message saying he thinks it's "AWESOME shit".
I dunno if it's some kind of joke, but the mere fact he's posted a news article about Greasy Housewife has instantly thrown us into the Auckland Music Scene quite, quite far. Almsost, my worry, too far - I'm a resident DJ now for Powertool Records, doing a fortnightly slot at a bar called Bacio here in Auckland, as well as advertising the fact I've a solo set at the PR Bar.....
I have actually created a monster. How do I feel? Confused, as you can probably imagine.
